Good point. Colored preferably, but the drawing could be in black and white and I could explain the colors to the tattoo artist.

They can. What usually happens is I go to them with an idea and a drawing of the idea, they take the drawing and add or change it so as to add their style into it. Giving them a base idea to work with though is always appreciated.
