Hey all,

So, I finally finished my project (which was hopefully the last
thing I do before I can start my graduation project), so tonight
I had some time on my hands. Since it's almost 5am now, one
could say that I had a LOT of time on my hands tonight <,<

There was something I had always wanted to try, and tonight I
decided to give it a shot.
I downloaded the following portrait drawing tutorial:
LINK
And the following portrait to draw:
Spoiler!

Since I'm completely new to this, it took me about an hour to
make the portrait not look like that girl at all. So I decided
to just improvise and create a different portrait, using the one
I downloaded as inspiration.

Well, this is the end result:
Spoiler!

I'm personally really happy with it, even though it doesn't look
a bit like the portrait I wanted to try and make.
However, I just started doing this and I could use some tips on
how I could improve. I'm aware that I didn't spend much time on
the clothing (which is basically, well, nothing right now).

Any feedback is welcome :]

some of the shadows look too soft. they're aren't any harder edged shadows. Looks like you just used the softest brush and painted. It's pretty good for a first attempt albeit, probably better than me.
Just keep at it.

I don't know if you've ever taken any formal art classes but you should always start with straight lines and a flat brush and just make rectangles for shadows with different grays. The reason is looking at the angle and proportion of straight lines is approx. 1mil times easier than curved lines. The shadows in your picture is completely wrong, in your picture it's her left eye and the right side of her face. Its fine if you want to emphasize different things, but it's not good to make up shadow intensity on a portrait.

Oh, I just looked at the link, um... I'd just draw wireframes until the face looks like the face you're trying to draw. Then move on to step 2, it doesn't matter how well you color if it doesn't look like the face.

Do you know any online tutorials that do it your way?
This was one of the first tutorials I found, and the steps
seemed logical to me, so that's why I tried to follow them.
I never had any art classes, so if you have an example of
what you mean with the rectangles etc. that would be great :]

Lol well perhaps you have some things that could help me
which you could scan? :sohappy:

Oh, and today I did a second try. I kept the basics of the
first tutorial I followed in the back of my mind, and made
the portrait without it. It's still a work in progress and
I plan to work on it some more tomorrow. I really had a lot
of difficulties with the hair, but I think it turned out
pretty ok. Any comments and feedback are again appreciated.
Like I said, I will work on it more to finish it later.

P.s. It's my brother in the picture ;]

You should refrain from using custom brushes (beard and hair?), just use a thin basic brush, keep it as hard as possible.

- The eyes are a little small and lack the dead-fish look he has in the picture... (btw, make the white dot with a hard brush and give it some glowage instead, it looks much better that way)
- eyebrows waaaay too thick
- 5 o'clock too clean
- left cheek bulge is too low, makes his face look rounded
- If you wanna draw curly hair just draw a sort dark mass where his hair should be. Then pick a lighter (brown I suppose) colour and make some simple curls in it. Then finally pick a colour that is near white and go over the places where the light bounces off to make it look realistic.
DO NOT USE A SOFT BRUSH FOR HAIR
- Don't forget to add a little bit of white on the face as well. People aren't matte after all.
- it would help you pick colours (and would help us compare) if the background has more or less the same colours as in the photo.
