Well, schools in big cities are forced to use multilevel buildings, like in New York City. They can't build out, so they build up.
Varies from location to location. With that said, most public schools where I live are 1 or 2 levels, but private schools tend to build 3-5 levels. My school was mostly 2 or 3 levels with a 4 level clock/bell tower.
