I won't bother defending Kimi no Iru machi as at this point it's turned to shit.
Kinda like bleach in that regard: starts off nice, becomes great and then jumps down shit caverns...
I mostly read it now just cause I've started it and it's still within bearable limits.

As for Evangelion:
I'll be frank, I dislike symbolism as a thing in general. I simply don't see a reason to make roundabout references rather than just speak of it. It's not more interesting that way, it's just annoying.
For this same reason I tend to dislike most poetry as well.

However now my real issues with the show:
- no plot / inconsistent plot
The anime never showed much plot. What were the angels? Where did they come from? Why did they attack?
It's just: NERV gets kids -> Kids destroy angels with robots -> Wait for the next angel -> repeat.
Why did they do this and how the crap was any of this even remotely connected with the human instrumentality project?
Basically what was the whole point of the anime? The angel wars weren't particularly interesting... It was all pretty slow-paced so not a whole lot of tension going on there (not to mention the angels' designs were pretty lame). Perhaps the only part that kinda had a message going was the H.I.P. Cept the message seemed to be that your truths depend on your view in life. That's kind of a no-shit-sherlock lesson there. It's not a terrible lesson, but it didn't need 20-something episodes of prelude just to say that.

- almost no character development
There really was none... They started off angsty, they stayed angsty throughout.
It's not even like watching a train crash; the trains had already crashed here. It was maybe more like watching birds poop on the wrecks; minor developments with little effect on the whole.

Finally there's an issue that's definitely my own fault, but it still counts >_>
I kinda had my hopes up for an anime with awesome robot action since it was Gainax, but it was quite the opposite and just wasn't pleasantly surprised by it :/.
