The thing is that I really don't like the idea of perpetually upgrading my PC. I just want something that will last reasonably for 5-6 years and then I build another. I'm a shortsighted penny pincher :D

Quote:
But why spent 900€ on materials that are 2year old already? >.> Just spend it on new stuff

Cause newer isn't always better. I'm not an early adopter kind of guy, I'll pick the tried and tested over the new and flashy. 6th gen is still brand new, good components are either expensive or severly meh. DDR4 has barely been touched upon by regular consumers.
Those 6th gen CPU's will come out sooner or later with another edition with some improved architecture and whatnot (Kaby lake?)
Until then I'm kinda of the opinion that 4th gen is still a better option as its tried and tested and performs perfectly well.

6th gen CPU just locks me in compatibility hell atm.

anyway... I'll make a another build that pushes the 1000. but probably after the 7th. Gotta retake an exam for the 3rd time >__>. Damned Fourier transformations are bloody sorcery D:

edit: **** my exam. teacher turning it into an oral exam this time cause not a whole lot of people taking it. I'm just gonna nope this one out and try in june instead. I'm too sick for this anyway >_>

Alright. Sorry that took so long. As soon as I gave up on that test, my motivation to do anything useful disappeared.

Here's the 1000 euro build. Split it between 2 stores, since the price went quite a bit over if I didn't.
Spoiler!

- Got a better case,
- EVGA G2 Supernova 650
- intel 4690 CPU.
- Samsung EVO 850 was heavily priced off so I decided to go with it despite my distrust for samsung.
- Sapphire R9 390. Club3D version apparantly had noisy fans...

edit:
switched to Sapphire version of 390. +7,10 to the price. updated image.

Good luck.. ^

Well, I'm sorry to hijack your thread!
Just a short question!
What is better nowadays?... liquid cooling or air cooling?

Liquid cooling should always be better, but it isn't the norm. It's more expensive, harder to set up and unnecessary in most normal PC's. Liquid is more likely to be used for systems with 2+ GPU's which generate too much heat. Then you'd better go liquid unless you want your computer to sound like an F16 :D

___

2/3 boxes already arrived :o
Spoiler!

Now just the last box with CPU/GPU/PSU/Case -.-

Yeah I know. I've made a boot discs a few times for Ubuntu on my laptop and for reinstalling Debian a few times on a Beaglebone Black :/

So. PC is on. PC works. I can't get my second display to work :X
It's a really old display with a VGA socket. I've got a (DP to DVI) + (DVI to VGA) plugged into the GPU, but it's not picking up anything :(

Any suggestions? It's an old acer AL1703

I'm gonna have to try finding a DP2VGA cable I guess. Monitor cables are finicky so running it through 2 adapters probably doesn't help my cause much :/

Won't work using 2 pieces on 1 connector
DP = Digital
VGA = Analog
U'll need an actual converter (cable with a kinda big block on it)

Just my luck...

Today I finally got around getting an adapter for that 2nd monitor. Plug it in, works. Needed to fix some settings, but it was ok.

I go out for a walk, then come back and the fuse has been triggered... My whole room is without power. Seems the power adapter of my monitor is busted. Probably some loose wires somewhere inside... Had some issues with it a few months back as well. Monitor just up and died back then, though the fuse didn't flip then and plugging it in and out a few times seemed to solve the issue...

luckily nothing seems to be broken.

Yay!!! The wallpaper depicting a city has finally arrived and I see you waste no time in setting it up... On a serious note though I have been thinking of putting something together myself....

Even though my gaming laptop is great for almost any game it does at times overheat and tries to shut down even with a fan underneath.... Since I don't like the clunky nature of desktops anymore I was wondering about those mini machines which is basically a desktop in a small form factor....Are those any good??...

Truth be told the size of the actual case rarely matters. Most of the space is taken up by monitors, speakers, keyboards, mice and wires. The box usually just sits somewhere under your table...
Now if you've got like the perfect hole around your desk for a small sized desktop I suppose you could try, but if you don't you might as well go full ATX size imo. The bigger the box the more room for air to move around.

Obviously there are ways to save space still... A mounted monitor, a small ten-key-less keyboard, (though I can't comprehend how someone can live without a numpad...)a case that blends well with the rest of the room and some dank cable management can go a long way.

If it's really a clunkiness issue as opposed to a space issue you could try buying or making your own PC table with the hardware literally built into it like so:
Spoiler!

Or just a regular PC table:
Spoiler!

Oh yeah... so anyone know wtf this USB port is on the back? USB DAC-UP
Spoiler!

It's blocked by a metal pin so I can't use it... doesn't look like that on the box of my mobo :(
It's not really a major issue, but I do have a lot of USB devices to plug in so Im forced the use a hub at the moment.
DAC -> Digital Analog Converter? Audio equipment or something? Still... why is blocked off :S? idiot-proofing? Or did I actually managed to **** up and get install it badly...

Isn't that metal thing supposed to go next to the USB port? Maybe you bent it.

Found this on another forum:
Quote:
Gigabyte has a range of 'audiophile-grade' motherboards that contain the so called USB DAC-UP technology. According to their website these kind of motherboards are able to provide clean, noise-free power delivery to a DAC. The technology is supposed to take advantage of an isolated power source that minimizes potential fluctuations.

I have no clue how I managed to do that... the only thing there is the IO shield...

This small form factor custom built PC tickles my interests.....aaauuuugh but the thought of searching the web for good deals on parts and then putting it all together feels like such a chore....I'm not the enthusiasts I once was....and I wasn't that much of an enthusiasts to begin with...
