So a small group of my RL friends want to pick up an mmo and one of them has never played one before so we decided sro will probably be the easiest to teach him on since its so simple. Only problem is he runs Linux, can SRO run on linux? If so can it run a private server, because I do not want to play on iSRO.

Also what would you consider the easiest Chn build to use.

The easiest CH build would probably be glavier. Lots of HP, nice dmg.

I figured it would be S/S since you get decent defense.

yes, sro runs perfectly under wine

Most pservers will work (except ones using some kind of packer)

The SRO server files however will -not- run under linux

Perfectly?

When I try to load SRO in xubuntu, I get...

Failed to initialize NetEngine [Error Code(5,127)]

Then the launcher window comes up, but there is no Start button to enter the game.

I remember years ago someone having this same problem as they worked to get SRO going on Linux...

I don't know, haven't used sro on linux for the past 3 years.

I know that it's possible though, I have played Zelos for hours on wine (2011 ksro client) so unless they changed something significant it should work, as wine only gets better with the years :sohappy:

I haven't even touched SRO in several years. Back between 2006 and 2009 or so, I started on Windows XP, but moved to Ubuntu. SRO installed and played perfectly (for me at least) on Ubuntu with wine.

After that time, I stopped playing, and tried going back once or twice between around 2010 and 2013. I never did get it to install properly again. I'm not sure what the problem is. I didn't do anything special. I already have wine installed. So I downloaded SRO from the silkroadonline.com website, the installer worked without a problem. But when trying to actually load the game launcher, it gives that error I posted above.

I also attempted to install the game using the same installer in a Windows XP SP3 virtual machine. That attempt said something about the installer file being corrupt. It did this on at least 2 separate downloads of the installer.

@BuDo - Any clue what the person might have done years ago to get it to work?

I took another stab at this today on Xubuntu. I tried the following:

1. Installed SRO using the .exe file downloaded from silkroadonline.net
$ wine ~/Downloads/SilkroadOnlineGlobalOfficial...<version>.exe

2. Received error: Failed to Initialize NetEngine...

3. Installed PlayOnLinux (requires p7zip-full)
$ sudo apt-get install playonlinux p7zip-full

4. Tried running Silkroad again
- Select it within PlayOnLinux's window and click "Run"
- Failed to Initialize NetEngine

5. From within PlayOnLinux...
- Install DirectX9
- Install wine 1.2 (and select it as default)

6. Run Silkroad again from within PlayOnLinux
- SRO started updating itself as one would expect from the game launcher
- about half way through, it failed to patch.

7. Tried running SRO again in PlayOnLinux
- No window or anything showed up for a good minute or two, then it failed to load stating the server is undergoing maintenance

Guess I'll have to try again another day. At least it started to update.
