PlayStation 4 will stream PlayStation 3 games - Report

Cloud streaming service in the PlayStation 4 designed said to allow users to play PlayStation 3 games on the next-gen console.

The PlayStation 4 will be able to stream PlayStation 3 games over the Internet, according to a report published by The Wall Street Journal.

Citing sources "familiar" with Sony's plans, the WSJ reports that "the new technology, to be unveiled Wednesday along with the new console, will allow users to play games delivered over the Internet, these people said. The streaming service, they added, is designed to use current PlayStation 3 titles on the new console; the new device is also expected to play new games stored on optical discs."

The WSJ adds that streaming support in the PlayStation 4 comes alongside "other enhancements to bolster its position on the market," but does not go any further into what these might be.

Two photographs of the PlayStation 4's devkit controller have surfaced recently, showing a front-facing touch screen and an integrated speaker. Another rumour has said Sony will be focusing on new play options as opposed to technical power, though one leaked specification sheet for the PlayStation 4 suggests a machine significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3.

Sony acquired streaming company Gaikai last year for $380 million, and since then the Gaikai website has teased pictures of Uncharted, Killzone, and Metal Gear Solid.

Sony today updated its website for PlayStation Meeting 2013 to show a video titled PlayStation Evolution, which could potentially be teasing a PlayStation 4 unveiling at the New York event on February 20, which will take place at 18:00 EST/15:00 PST/23:00 GMT.

Next Mass Effect game will be 'fresh and new'

BioWare executive producer Casey Hudson says next game in series will offer new ideas; feature film with Legendary remains in production.

During a presentation at PAX East, BioWare executive producer Casey Hudson said the next entry in the Mass Effect franchise will be "fresh and new." This game will be primarily developed by BioWare Montreal and Hudson will serve as the game's executive producer.

"We are starting to get ready to develop another Mass Effect game and it's going to be a new thing," Hudson said. "We want to be able to give fans an opportunity to get back into the world with these things you've come to know and love about the Mass Effect experience, but start something fresh and new; a new way for you to explore the whole universe in Mass Effect."

In addition, Hudson today confirmed that the Mass Effect movie with Legendary Pictures remains in production, though no release date or casting details were divulged.

"Hopefully it should be seen as a good thing," Hudson said of the movie. "Because what we're looking at are, I think, the right things to make sure it's going to be great. It's not just going to be a movie. It's going to be really special."

Lastly, Hudson reiterated that BioWare is working on an all-new intellectual property. Specific details on this project were not mentioned, though Hudson said he hopes this project could match the trajectory of the Mass Effect series.

"That's kind of our next thing. We're focusing on delivering something new, the way we did at the very beginning of Mass Effect," Hudson said.

BioWare also confirmed today that 82 percent of all Mass Effect 3 gamers play a male Commander Shepard.

EA says DRM a 'failed, dead-end strategy'

Labels boss Frank Gibeau says digital rights management "not a viable strategy" for gaming at large. Digital rights management (DRM) is a broken system, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau told GamesIndustry International this week at the Game Developers Conference.

"DRM is a failed, dead-end strategy; it's not a viable strategy for the gaming business," Gibeau said.

The EA executive's comments came in response to a question about whether or not SimCity's always-online mandate was actually a form of DRM. Gibeau insisted this is not the case.

"That's not the reality; I was involved in all the meetings. DRM was never even brought up once," he said. "For the folks who have conspiracy theories about evil suits at EA forcing DRM down the throats of Maxis, that's not the case at all."

SimCity launched earlier this month amid server woes that made the game unplayable for some. The city-building game went on to sell over 1.1 million copies during its first two weeks, marking the best start in franchise history.

Molyneux says Curiosity prize is only temporary

Molyneux says Curiosity winner's role as main Godus deity won't last forever, though the "grace period" is still being decided.

Godus' virtual god of gods, announced as Curiosity winner Bryan Henderson, won't get to reign over 22 Cans' upcoming god sim indefinitely, studio boss Peter Molyneux has confirmed.

Henderson chipped off the last cubelet from the Curiosity cube on Monday, unearthing a pre-recorded message from Peter Molyneux and the prize of digital godhood in 22 Cans' upcoming simulation Godus. Henderson will also receive an undisclosed portion of the game's funds.

But Henderson won't get to reign over Godus forever. "It didn't seem right to me that Bryan would be god of gods for all time," said Molyneux to Rock Paper Shotgun. "It seems right to me that he has a period of time to be god of gods, and that can't just be a few days. It needs to be substantial. And in that time, many things could happen. And of course, the amount of physical money he gets depends on how successful the game is."

Clarifying the situation further, Molyneux added that "what Bryan has won is a grace period where he can be god of gods for a certain amount of time."

When Henderson's tenure as Godus' god is up the game will allow him to be usurped by another player, who will then take his powers. "We’re talking about that period of time [right now]," he said. "It won’t be less than a few months. It might not be more than a year. And then we’ll unveil the ability to usurp the god of gods and replace him with someone else. That someone else will then take on all of Bryan’s powers.”

Molyneux also added that Henderson's upcoming godly powers aren't infinite, and that they need to be vetted through developer 22 Cans first. Molyneux said those powers "aren't going to be is carte blanche uncontrolled, unrefined decisions that would throw the balance of the game out entirely."

"Bryan can absolutely request something to happen, and we'll make our best effort to do it. But he can't decide everybody in Canada will explode or anything like that. There are limits to his power."

Sony launching PS3 firmware fix next week

Company says it has identified issue in firmware 4.45 that "bricked" some systems and will launch a fix on June 27.

Sony will release a new PlayStation 3 firmware update next week that aims to fix the 4.45 update that "bricked" some consoles, the company announced today. The new update will be released on June 27.

"We have identified the issue related to the PlayStation 3 software update (version 4.45) that impacted a small number of PS3 systems earlier this week," Sony said in a statement. "A new PS3 system software update is planned to be released on June 27 that resolves the issue."

Several users reported on the PlayStation forums this week that the 4.45 update caused their systems to become locked down. Sony pulled the update, though the company has not said how many systems were affected.

League of Legends dev opens NYC office

Riot Games opens new 6,000 square foot outfit in New York City; will pay $240,000 per year for rent.

League of Legends developer Riot Games has opened an office in New York City.

The real estate transaction was revealed by The New York Times, which reports Riot Games has committed to a five-year lease with an annual rent of $240,000.

The office space is just under 6,000 square feet and is located in a 12-story 1916 building. It is located at 49 West 23rd Street (between Fifth Avenue and Avenue of the Americas).

A Riot Games representative told GameSpot that the new office space will be staffed by employees working on eSports broadcasting and content.

"We've already got a handful of people in NYC supporting eSports broadcasting and content, and this office is going to be more permanent space for that team to continue to do their eSports thing," the company said.

Riot Games is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. The company has other North American offices in Saint Louis, Missouri and Sao Paulo, Brazil, as well as international studios in Dublin, Seoul, Istanbul, Moscow, and Sydney.

900,000 Xbox Ones went unsold worldwide in 2013

Microsoft representative says, "We sold through nearly every unit we could in the holiday period and pulled forward as many units as we could from Q3."

Microsoft announced today as part of its latest financial report that it sold to retailers (shipped) 3.9 million Xbox One consoles worldwide during the quarter ended December 31. It sounds like a big number, but it doesn't tell the whole story.

Microsoft previously announced that it sold to consumers 3 million systems worldwide by that same end-date, meaning there were actually 900,000 Xbox One consoles either left on store shelves or in transport during the year. This despite Microsoft saying it was selling every console it could make.

Sony sold 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles in 2013, but we won't know how many units were left on shelves during the year, if any, until the company reports earnings in early February.

Total Devices and Consumer revenue, the Microsoft business segment to which the Xbox unit belongs, saw revenue for the quarter rise 13 percent to $11.91 billion. Microsoft also shipped 3.5 million Xbox 360 consoles during quarter, bringing total Xbox console shipments to 7.4 million.

Xbox platform revenue increased to $1.6 billion due to the release of the Xbox One, though cost of revenue also increased due to the higher volumes of consoles sold and "additional costs" associated with the release of the Xbox One. Xbox Live continued to be a bright spot for Microsoft during the quarter, with transactional revenue rising more than 25 percent.

Overall, Microsoft announced record revenue of $24.52 billion for the quarter, and a net profit of $6.56 billion, which is up year-over-year.

1,000 devs signed up to make games for PlayStation platforms

1,000 developers are now licensed globally to self-publish on PlayStation platforms, Sony has announced.

200 of those developers were licensed in North America since the PlayStation 4 was first unveiled in February 2013.

Self-publishing allows small developers to sell their games on the PlayStation store alongside games from the biggest companies. Writing on its official blog, PlayStation’s Vice President, Developer and Publisher Relations Adam Boyes said that’s how games like Don’t Starve and Outlast found their way to PlayStation platforms. Other self-published games coming to PlayStation this year include Rogue Legacy, N++, and The Witness.

Sony published a master list of more than 100 PS4 games that will be available on the platform by the end of the year, many of which are self-published.
