15/06/07 = CEO: Sony 'refining' PS3 price
Sir Howard Stringer pondering just how much he can afford to knock off the PS3's price tag to boost sales.

A price cut for the PlayStation 3 got closer to reality today. Sony chairman and CEO Sir Howard Stringer has told the Financial Times that he is aware that there is "no question" that consumers want a lower price tag.

Stringer praised the success of rival Nintendo's latest console, the Wii, saying that the company "has been a successful enterprise, and a very good business model compared with ours." However, he vehemently disagreed that the Wii was more fun to play. "No, no, no, no," the executive replied to the question. He also attributed much of the difference in sales between the two consoles as due to the fact that the Wii was significantly cheaper, and that the two systems were "complementary and supplementary," to each other, and not in direct competition.

In light of this, Stringer confirmed that Sony would be looking to cut the price of the PS3--he gave no specific amount, but indicated that the company was looking to make a decision about this before the holiday season. He said, "[The amount of the price cut] is what we are studying at the moment. That's what we are trying to define."

They'll make it all back once good games for ps3 come out. And the price cut will help sell out the ps3 by Christmas imo. (If it's low enough. Hopefully it goes down to about $400 =)

17/06/07 = Half-Life 2: Orange Box opening October 9

Valve will ship its PC, PS3, and 360 shooter compilation in the midst of the crowded fall season.

Gamers wondering what to do between Halo 3's September 25 release and Grand Theft Auto IV's October 16 ship date got their answer today. Valve Software has confirmed to GameSpot that it will release Half-Life 2: The Orange Box on October 9, putting it at the front end of an increasingly crowded holiday release season.

Half-Life 2: The Orange Box is being billed as a new way of selling games. The bundle compiles the critically acclaimed 2004 game Half-Life 2 with its Episode One and Episode Two (2007) expansions as well as two other games--the resurrected and reimagined Team Fortress 2 and the new dimension-hopping title Portal. Earlier this year, Valve canceled plans to release Half-Life 2: The Black Box, which consisted of the PC versions of Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Team Fortress 2, and Portal.

Yess im glad they have a bundle like this, because i wanted HL2, so i would have to buy the bundle with like 3 other games i already have, so i thought it would be a waste of money, and now they have this :D

LOL at HD-DVD looks like blu-ray is gonna beat them
http://www.elpasotimes.com/entertainment/ci_6164939

Quote:
LOS ANGELES - Blockbuster Inc. will rent high-definition DVDs only in the Blu-ray format in 1,450 stores when it expands its high-def offerings next month, dealing a major blow to the rival HD DVD format.
The move, being announced Monday, could be the first step in resolving a format war that has kept confused consumers from rushing to buy new DVD players until they can determine which format will dominate the market.

Blockbuster has been renting both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles in 250 stores since late last year and found that consumers were choosing Blu-ray titles more than 70 percent of the time.

"The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing," Matthew Smith, senior vice president of merchandising at Blockbuster, told The Associated Press.

Blockbuster will continue to rent HD DVD titles in the original 250 locations and online, the Dallas-based company said.

The decision was helped in large part by the lopsided availability of titles in Blu-ray, Smith said.

All major studios except one are releasing films in Blu-ray, with several, including The Walt Disney Co., releasing exclusively in Blu-ray. Only Universal Studios, which is owned by General Electric Co., exclusively supports HD DVD.
Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., and Paramount Pictures, which is owned by Viacom Inc., release films in both formats.

"When you walk into a store and see all this product available in Blu-ray and there is less available on HD DVD, I think the consumer gets that," Smith said.

The rollout of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 game console, which comes standard with a Blu-ray drive, also helped give the format momentum, Smith said.

Blockbuster's decision, while significant on it's own, could boost Blu-ray even more if other retailers follow suit.

"It will help shift the balance toward Blu-ray, clearly," said Richard Doherty, president of The Envisioneering Group, a research company.

The North American HD DVD Promotional Group said Blockbuster's decision was shortsighted and skewed by the success of films released by Blu-ray studios in the first three months of the year. The group said HD DVD has since gained momentum, selling more players and popular titles such as "The 40-Year Old Virgin" and "The Matrix" trilogy.

"I think trying to make a format decision using such a short time period is really not measuring what the consumer is saying," said Ken Graffeo, co-president of the group.

The two formats have been battling it out since they both hit the market last year. Studios hope the high-definition discs, with their sharper picture and more room for interactive special features and games, will replace standard definition DVDs.

The formats are incompatible and neither will play on standard DVD players, although standard DVDs can be viewed with either a Blu-ray or HD DVD player.

The Blu-ray camp has been helped by the release of such huge hits as "Casino Royale," ''Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Spider-Man" coming out exclusively in its format.

As the battle has unfolded, the price of the high-definition players needed to show the movies has plummeted. Toshiba Corp., the major supporter of HD DVD, is selling its player for $299 with a rebate, down from $499 when it first went on sale.

Sony, which is pushing Blu-ray, recently slashed the price of its player by more than half to $499. The player retailed for $1,000 when it first was introduced.

Sony are basicly taking a huge gamble here with Blu-Ray.

when it comes down to it if you actually see which titles are in Blu-Ray
or HD-DVD its just like DVD titles are now..90% of them are shit, i mean
the only films worth buying on DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD are either old films
that you like (which dont look any better on the new formats) or huge
bugdet special effects.

i mean who would buy "Charlotte's Web" or "music and lyrics" and be
wondering which format would be better

18/06/07 = Q&A: Infinity Ward's Grant Collier on Call of Duty 4

Infinity Ward studio head Grant Collier on creating Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, why they ditched the World War II setting, Mecha-Hitler, and why Live 360 versus PC matches don't appeal

When publisher Activision and Infinity Ward unveiled the latest in the uber-successful Call of Duty franchise several months back, they had a huge surprise for long-term fans--the series was ditching World War II in favour of a contemporary setting. GameSpot AU spoke to Infinity Ward studio head Grant Collier on a recent trip down under to find out more about Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, why the series was moved into the present day, and why Live functionality between the Xbox 360 and PC versions isn't being built into the game.

GameSpot AU: Infinity Ward's last game--Call of Duty 2 for the Xbox 360--was one of the key launch titles for Microsoft's new console. What sort of pressure did that put the team under?

Grant Collier: There was definitely pressure, but it was all pretty much self-imposed. As a developer, there are only a few things that elevate you out of the masses--being able to step up to the plate and deliver on a launch title is one of those things. That can make you a household name. I mean, how many of Bungie’s games can you remember before Halo? They did a bunch. What really put them on the map was they successfully made a launch title for the Xbox and did a great job. There are many stories of developers coming out of obscurity and into the mainstream by doing that. It was an exciting opportunity to have been given to us, and we said early on that we were not going to squander that opportunity.

GS AU: Is there even more pressure now for Call of Duty 4?

GC: I doubt that the amount of pressure externally can match the amount we put internally on each other. People coming in from the outside will probably be a little shell-shocked coming in and seeing our development process. Because when people come in and pitch some ideas, they’ll get slapped down. You have to have the fortitude to keep modifying your idea, bringing it back in, having it slapped down again, and just continuously modifying it. Once you’ve done that many, many times, then you can finally gain acceptance with your idea and push it through and make it happen in the game. I’ve had a hundred ideas knocked down—it’s your 101st idea that makes it in. We’re really hard on ourselves, and we set a high bar for ourselves, and I think it’s one of those bars that you can never actually reach. So external pressure has never really fazed us.

GS AU: You've shifted the setting of this game into the modern era. What did that allow you to do that you couldn't achieve if you stuck with World War II?

GC: We really wanted to have characters that were memorable, and we wanted to have those characters be able to be in different settings. In the past it was always, well, if you wanted winter, you have to be in Russia. If you wanted desert, then you’re with the British in North Africa. We wanted to keep the game fresh by moving to new settings, but we had to leave all the people behind when we did change. With a modern conflict, you have high-speed transportation, but we also wanted to keep it to units that would realistically be able to be redeployed very quickly. We wanted Call of Duty to always be a global conflict, and we want to be able to do that and not be hampered in creating compelling characters.

We also wanted to be able to create our own villain. You kind of have your baked-in villain in WWII--the Nazis. Anything else you create becomes absurd, such as when people try to create a previously unnamed Nazi, or "here’s the return of Mecha-Hitler", or something like that. Also, there's the modular nature of the weaponry in modern times which allows us to give weapons a lot of personality. In WWII, you can pretty much put scopes on rifles, and that was all the modular nature of weaponry in WWII.

19/06/07 = Manhunt 2 banned in UK

[UPDATE] Rockstar's upcoming game denied classification by the BBFC board due to its 'unremitting bleakness' and 'casual sadism;' Irish film board follows suit.

Rockstar Games' Manhunt 2 has achieved the dubious honour of being only one of two games to be banned in the UK. The highly anticipated upcoming title, which casts gamers in the role of doctor Daniel Lam--who offers himself as a guinea pig for a neurological weapons project--was due to go on sale in the country on the Wii, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation 2 on July 13. However, both the PS2 and Wii versions have been refused a rating by the British Board of Film Classification, meaning they cannot be legally sold in the UK. The PSP version has not yet been submitted to the BBFC for a rating.

Manhunt 2 Will this be as close as British and Irish gamers get to Manhunt 2?
Watch | Download The reasoning behind the decision is that, according to BBFC director David Cooke, "Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing. There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game."

Cooke says that the decision is not one that the board has taken lightly, and that where possible, it considers cuts or modifications to the game to remove offensive material. However, in the case of Manhunt 2 "this has not been possible.

22/06/07 = Take-Two shelves Manhunt 2

Plans to release game "temporarily suspended" while publisher continues exploring options.

In the wake of international bans and an Adults Only rating in the US, Manhunt 2 won't make its July 10 release date, Take-Two Interactive has confirmed. The game had been expected to ship that day for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Nintendo Wii.

"Take-Two Interactive Software has temporarily suspended plans to distribute Manhunt 2 for the Wii or PlayStation platforms while it reviews its options with regard to the recent decisions made by the British Board of Film Classification and Entertainment Software Rating Board," a representative told GameSpot. "We continue to stand behind this extraordinary game. We believe in freedom of creative expression, as well as responsible marketing, both of which are essential to our business of making great entertainment."
