For the last couple of days, I think ever since that day the forums was down and was just saying "be back soon" I've been getting SQL errors when visiting it from time to time. I actually just decided earlier to make a topic, but since then it hasn't happened, so I have no screenshot to take of the error itself. Once I get it, I'll post a screenshot and hopefully it can be fixed by the appropriate person.

I get one like once or twice a day when I check SRF, not all the time. The error is always exactly the same as the one I posted above. No idea why this happens though, I actually first thought it was just me until i noticed MrJoey's post here..

For me it's more once or twice a week. Just got one for the first time in quite a few days.

I get those pretty much every day when I try open the forum.

Does anyone know what's wrong?

Post subject:  Re: SQL errors

I have personally never gotten any of those, and I use SRF every day.
Sounds kinda weird.

I still get them once or twice a day, but only when I try to view the index page.

Author:  MrJoey [ Sun Oct 16, 2011 12:46 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: SQL errors

Yeah, for some reason the Index page is the only page that gets the error for me too, so it isn't a big problem since I use the links on the left to navigate the site, except for once in a while when I'm just logging on.

I keep getting them also. As well as Noticing that some threads are telling me they are Locked when they are NOT locked. Like this thread. viewtopic.php?f=76&t=129233
If I just click into other games, it tells me it's locked, but I can reply and I know that it isn't locked.

The errors only occur when I write silkroadforums.com instead for www.silkroadforums.com. 0o

Post subject:  Re: SQL errors

I actually got the error myself. I found it.

This is the auto pruning line of the index page. We had so many thousands of inactive users who never completed their registration by returning their registration email. I tried doing batch prunes within the control panel, but the scale of qualifying accounts was so massive, it would bring the system to its knees and never complete the task.

So.

A script was made. Every time someone views the index page, it has a small chance to 'snipe' out a random inactive user ($lottery) whos account is 2 years old or more, has no posts and never returned the registration email.

Well.

After about 5 months, it ran out of qualifying users. RIP some 20K accounts. And therefore, errors out. Each day, more accounts become qualified (as they become older than 2 years) but not enough to 'sustain' the frequency that this chance occurs.

Thus the error.

I have a correction ready, but I'm having trouble as of late getting into the FTP. Hopefully it will be sorted soon.

Not related to the errors - but is it just for me the website has been really slow the last days? It has worked fine today though.

It has been working normally with me.

If it was only briefly, I might have been responsible for that.
My actions in the administration control panel often slow down the forum, but that lasts no longer than a minute, and should not persist once I'm done.

While me and gaige were in skype a few days ago we both noticed it, and gaige said something about the website possibly being ddosed idk

I wouldn't say it's impossible, but I find the chance of a DDoS attack highly unlikely. We have not banned any major characters for a while, and I doubt people hold a grudge against us for so long. Then again, we did have some interesting SRF'ers that got the banhammer and weren't really happy with it.

About the downtime we just had: I fear I'm - although indirectly - responsible for that. While forum moderation has been very time-consuming lately, this time it brought the forum on its knees, resulting into a downtime which lasted around 50 minutes.

Might just be unhappy coincidence, though, but coincidence makes a terrible scapegoat.

So from Ryoko's post, if a member changed some details in the last couple months and didn't respond, could that account be deleted/marked inactive?

eg. Image

It could get marked inactive but i believe that only accounts with 0 posts get deleted eventually.
