There probably aren't many people who appreciate how cool that is but I do personally. I haven't used Linux, or BSD for that matter, in a long time cuz I haven't needed the speed or extra functionality. But I have an old box that I'd like to run Silkroad on. A BSD guide would be cool or if it is simply Wine I can figure it out myself, IDK if Wine is for BSD don't flame if isn't... If you are going to make a guide for BSD you'd probably want to stress how fast BSD is since it's even more unheard of than Linux.

I used to have BSD. An easy one to install is PC-BSD. It installed very easily. I have no idea if there is a wine variant for BSD, but I believe BSD has a 'Linux compatibility' mode (probably have to install a package for it). Then try running wine from that.

Check out http://www.pbidir.com for PC-BSD packages to install after you get the OS up and running. Those are setup packages similar to 'setup.exe' for Windows. :D

I myself as a gamer, find Linux Ubuntu as a FAIL for games... even if you get the game to work, it takes you about 2 hours to do so, and then again theres a high chance that it wont work at all.

I as a gamer prefer having Windows OS to play my gaes on, Linux for everything else

You must fail at Linux then.

It takes 2 hours? High chance it won't work? Hmm let's see. I spent a grand total of 70 minutes doing the following:

1. log onto Gentoo
2. browse to ubuntu.com
3. download the ubuntu ISO
4. download/install cdrecord into Gentoo to burn CDs
5. burn ubuntu ISO onto a CD
6. reboot into Ubuntu CD
7. Install Ubuntu
8. Install nvidia drivers, wine

The next step, after the 70 minutes, was to install SRO. That was maybe 10 minutes including all the updates.

Everything worked flawlessly.

Getting SRO to work on Gentoo itself, that's another story... but Gentoo is, well... special.

Try doing steps 1 - 8 in Windows in under an hour and a half (more time than it took me in Ubuntu/Gentoo.

I've tried playing SRO on Linux for the most part it works perfectly fine. However I have an issue that whenever a Bard casts a skill from the Dancing line or if I join a party with a Dance currently casted, the game will crash. This is under ubuntu 8.04 and wine (tried the latest development version 1.1.6 and the latest stable version 1.0.0. Can anyone else confirm having the same issue?

I have a bard subclass, and I cast my bard buffs often, usually just noise and moving march. I'll have to try dancing series next time I'm on.

I don't see why not. SRO is SRO, regardless of the country that runs it. It's essentially the same client.

Manage to try any of the Dancing Skills yet Prometheus?

For those who have trouble updating SRO, you can try running this command in the terminal: env WINEPREFIX="/home/<enter your username>/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\Silkroad\Silkroad.exe" (Replacing <enter your username>).

I forgot about that. I don't think I have. I just logged off or I'd check. Are the dancing skills the very bottom skill tree in bard? If so, I just added 2 skills from there today, but didn't get to use them yet.

I really don't use bard much except for noise and moving march.

Yeah they are on the bottom under Dancing Concert I believe. I'm not too familiar with all the Bard skills, but I'm pretty sure you need another Bard in your party in order to perform them.

I sent myself an email reminding myself to test out the dancing series. I'll let you know if it crashes.

Just thought i would drop by and leave this little tip:

After research and testing me and some friends have discovered that, no bot programs will work with Ubuntu, not sure why, but they don't. So not only will Ubuntu give you a faster game, its also as legit as you can get.

So try it today!

I don't see why a bot wouldn't work in Ubuntu. Bot software is just another Windows application. I even saw some screenshots with a bot client in the toolbar on an Ubuntu desktop.

Well i have certain friends that still play silkroad, and unfortunately bot. However, after they tried Ubuntu, they said they didn't like it as they could not bot due to their programs not working.
My guess would be because Dll files would not work?

Well there are some Win32 APIs that are not fully implemented in WINE. If bots use those APIs, then they wouldn't work correctly or at all. DLLs themselves should work fine if they don't use those API calls that are not fully implemented.

Seems on average, most Windows software I've come across works pretty well. More complex things like Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 wouldn't work so well. I believe the WINE app database actually says VS 2005 barely even loads nevermind work properly.

Silkroad version 1.091? That sounds like a pretty old version. Any version should auto-update, but perhaps that one is just too old to even auto update at all? I think we're around version 1.6 now aren't we? Does your 1.091 version work in Windows?

Exactly. I didn't want to mention ECSRO in case it wasn't allowed around these forums. Yeah I'm still not able to get it to run on Ubuntu. I've upgraded to the newest version of Wine and tonight I'm going to update to Ubuntu 8.10 and get the newest Nvidia drivers.

Yeah, your allowed to talk about ECSRO here. However about the problem of it not working. Well im not really sure, im just guessing that the client was not updated to work with Ubuntu, considering thats its quite old.

Its quite unfortunate, considering that it would be great to play ECSRO on ubuntu.

I am running CrossOver for Mac ver. 7.02 and it is essential Wine for Mac and it crashes when a bard in party puts up dances of magic/fight/wizardry etc. It is most likely a graphics error with the visuals of the dance series. I will test if Effects are turned off will affect whether or not SRO crashes.

EDIT: IF SHOW EFFECTS is turned off, you will not crash. :D

It's a little annoying, but before you run the SRO launcher, you have to hide the two toolbars on your Ubuntu screen. Click the arrow button on either side of the bar at the top (the bar with the Application, places, and system menus) and the bar at the bottom (next to the trash can). This will slide the two bars to the corner of the screen.

You just have to hide the panels BEFORE opening the SRO launcher.

@Sovereign - My system is set to full resolution, same resolution in wine, sro, and xorg.conf, and I have this problem too. I just hide my panels and everything is fine.

I haven't tried this, but maybe you can set the panels to "not always on top" or similar so the SRO screen can go "over top" of the panels... Hiding them works fine too.
