I wrote this during the summer of '05 after a relationship ended horribly.
I was just digging through my email a few days ago, cleaning it out when I stumbled upon it. It brought back memories of the phase in my life where I spent almost all day writing songs and poems.

This was by far my favorite one. And it's a long one as well. It's more of a story than a song. I call it Strangers in the Night after Frank Sinatra's song, and you'll find his weaved in throughout the story. If you don't get it by the end, I'd be happy to tell you.

Critique? Thoughts?

Strangers In The Night

It was late night - the clock in my Range read midnight
Past twilight - the stars' light was sparse tonight
No clouds in sight - the dark sky was lit bright
By moonlight - but my mind wasn't sittin' right
So I tuned into the radio - it displayed an echo
But as the car would go farther down the road it grew bold
It must've been an oldies station - they were playin' Sinatra
"Strangers In The Night" - his voice conveyed a sonata
And I was taken far away to a distant location
Contemplatin' when a loud noise tested my patience
It was a young man drivin' a Plymouth Sundance
It was dark - but from a glance the damn thing looked tan
He was attempting a pass in a no passing zone
And I was goin' 10 over - he was advancing slow
I looked over and saw an angel on the road
Next to the guy was a girl I'd never seen before
She reached onto the dashboard and rested her head
Tilted it - I looked left and saw a tear expressed
She must've been in regret - she looked sad and scared
I heard a screech and looked over - the man almost hit my mirror
I slammed the brakes - the girl immediately sat straight
As the man hit the median and slammed his face
On the steering wheel - soon blood ran down his face
His car was stranded in place - the sound spanned all of space
Brake pads were in place as smoke was drifting from tires
I put my car in park and scanned the driver
"Damn, what's with this guy?" I caught myself saying
I got out my car and walked where the smoke was spraying
As I got there - the girl was hopelessly praying
I opened her door and asked, "Are you ok, ma'am?"
She looked up at me and smiled my way
As I heard the driver say, "Get the hell away"
I stated I was there to help - but the guy was insane
Got out of the car and blamed me for his mistake
I told him I hit my brake cuz he swerved out of place
He cussed me out - but soon the girl swung at his face
I was stunned - she pummelled him so I did too
And pretty soon he was simply lyin' bloody and bruised
I said, "What triggered the fuse?" She said, "The man deserved it
He was drinkin' all night on a violent resurgence"
I questioned her words but she said, "It occurs periodically
Put some liquor in his body and he'd beat me completely"
I couldn't stand to see any girl in pain
I offered her a ride and she smiled again
She hugged me - I put my arm around her - held her head
Stroked her curly blond hair and said, "I hope he's dead"
She backed away slightly and looked up at me
And said, "No, not even he should be that unlucky"
I couldn't believe it - she held compassion in her heart
Under her thin black leather jacket was a girl who'd been scarred
But she still didn't want the guy hurt too bad
Too bad - Cuz I still wished I had hit him harder with my hands
And at that time - a rainfall suddenly began
I looked up and saw a small cloud formation moving fast
I said, "We'd better go before it gets too bad"
We got into the car and drove around the bloody man
I looked over at the girl and she still looked sad
So I lent her my right and she held my hand
And at that time I noticed the radio was still playin'
And Sinatra was replaying - was it a sign? Something he was saying...

Strangers in the night exchanging glances
Wond'ring in the night
What were the chances we'd be sharing love
Before the night was through.

I drove down the road - suddenly it got cold
I closed my window and the girl said, "Slow"
But didn't expose what she meant - I was confused
She pointed - there was a sign illuminated by the moon
She wanted me to take the next exit off
So I turned off - she pointed to a motel she saw
So I drove up - it said 2 vacancies opened up
"I'm tired, don't leave me. I just need some sleep - it's been tough"
So I said I understood and walked inside
To the counter and talked to a peculiar guy
He said, "How many rooms?" I said, "Two" She said, "One"
I was stunned - I looked at her and said, "You heard the lady, son"
He looked up - he was insulted by my speech and demeanor
But he gave us a key - I paid the fee and went to see her
She was standing by the door - I got there and we walked through
It didn't look too nice but it had a nice view
It was surrounded by mountains in the background
There was a lake near - reflecting the sky as if the stars drowned
I started to sit down when a realization came
I said, "Damn...I don't even know your name"
"Nikki" She exclaimed - I gave her mine as a trade
She had a look of beauty undefined by word play
Or verbiage display - she was worth her weight--
In gold - Lonely with a smirk contained
She looked strange so I asked, "What are you thinking?"
And she distinctly said, "Would you mind listening?"
I shook my head - she sat down and began
She said, "That man back there nearly beat me to death"
I asked, "When?" And she replied, "It was months ago
But he changed...or so that's what I've been told
But I know better - I just didn't pay attention
I was hooked to his look - and he to my bodily dimensions
It was tempting - we were playing with fiery desires
But earlier tonight he got drunk and took pliers
And threatened to twist my arm in half
All cuz I wanted to leave the bar intact
But he wouldn't have that - I had to be his girl
He would've killed me - he didn't have a care in this world
And then there you were - there to bring me to safety
So I'm singing you praises - I'll even give you embraces
I just can't bear to face this alone anymore
If you leave me - I'll kill myself cold on the floor
So don't go through that door - just give me some time
Let me reason with my mind and find a reason to be alive"
I said, "Wait, but don't hesistate to tell me more
I can tell you've absorbed pain straight to your core
But that's no reason to contemplate suicide
Look into my eyes - I'm sittin' with you by your side
Realize that after darkness - inevitably comes light
After every slight eclipse - earth retains its sight
Each day is like the flow of a river to an ocean
It just keeps flowing - it won't stop - it just keeps going
And time keeps coming - each day is anew
The sunrise always follows the dip of the moon
Just set it into view - you'll see the truth
Regroup your mind state - Girl, I care for you"
She was still scared, I knew - but she slowly calmed down
Came around and asked me if I'd walk for a while
I smiled - took her hand and walked into the dark
Into a street illuminated by the sign where I parked

Something in your eyes was so inviting,
Something in you smile was so exciting,
Something in my heart,
Told me I must have you.

It was still raining slightly but this girl was content
So I went and never ever questioned her intent
We held hands - she said I had a tight grasp
She said, "At night I used to camp as a kid with my dad
But I witnessed it last...must've been years ago
He passed away - I shed so many tears - they flowed
I spent nights lying awake writing poetry
Letting it flow from me - things that he told to me
He was gold to me - worth more than diamond rings"
I said, "Most of my friends are dead - I know how it stings"
We stopped walking and embraced the silence surrounding
That time was dumbfounding - no longer numb to surroundings
We looked at each other - there was warmth in her eyes
She had a mesmerizing essence harbored inside
Her eyes appeared wise like Harvard or DeVry
We harmonized in our minds - every part of her shined
I couldn't hardly stand - I was entranced by her glance
I moved closer but she said, "I'm not ready for that"
So I looked back - she put her hand on my back
And said, "I just wanna wait...please don't think of me bad"
But I was confused - she only wanted one room
Then she's afraid to make a move - what does that prove?
I had no clue - So I just continued to walk
"Is this a taunt?" I thought - I decided to put thought off
We walked till we reached the peak of a hill
I looked around - but only moonlight lit the field
I looked at Nikki - she was tinted by the moon
Filled with a blue hue from this illustrious view
The celestial presence was intensely evident
Stars in the sky sparkled ever so delicate
And once again - we looked at each other in a gaze
In a daze - but I couldn't find a move to make
I was phased - and finally I uttered a phrase
"Nikki, you're more beautiful than the word beautiful can convey
You're an angel - the likes of which I have never seen
You gleam from your essence - your presence is supreme
Just give me 10 seconds so my soul can be free
I have never seen a girl who could do this to me"
She looked up - what I said was like something from a dream
She had a look of disbelief - she was unable to speak
Incapable of seeking any momentary speech
So she motioned to me to come closer - I agreed
The outline could be seen a mile away
Two shadows in the darkness separated by moon's rays
Slowly becoming glued to each other in one place
From far away - we appeared as one amidst the plain
And after several minutes - light dissected the middle section
And the moon could once again be seen between us - but we were present
Only within the minds of each other for seconds
We looked at each other - there was no second guessin'
Instantly we started pressin' against each other again
So we appeared as one entity surrounded by illumination
Just consumed in our relation - I was caught in the passion
A moment growin' hot amidst the cold we were stranded in
Rain still falling down from the skies
I felt her warm soothing breath amidst the cold night
And in that moment I was knowin' everything would be alright
And I think she felt the same - there was no fight, no flight
Just insight into the essence of each other
Her presence was enough to make my spinal column shudder

Strangers in the night, two lonely people
We were strangers in the night
Up to the moment
When we said our first hello.
Little did we know...

And after another kiss - we simply walked back
And talked and all that - she was all in a transe
I was trapped in the moment - attached to the hope
It was emotionally potent - not knowin' where it would go
We exited the cold and entered the room
By that time - she was so tired she could barely move
So I lied by her side - we stared at the moon
Through the window with the lights off - there in the room
And by the time I looked back she was fast asleep
So I covered her with sheets and decided to sleep
After several hours - I opened my eyes to see
Light was shining on me - I heard the sound of a key
I heard the door knob and wondered what it could be
I sat up in time to see the man who beat Nikki
Instantly I jumped out of bed - "I'm dreaming
There's no way I'm believing what my eyes are perceiving
What my mind's receiving is not what I'm seeing
This only happens in movies - not in reality"
But I closed my eyes and opened 'em back up
And I saw his ugly mug as he pulled out a gun
"You thought it was funny beating me when I was drunk
Don't you? I could barely remember what the bruises were from"
I looked over - Nikki was still sleeping sound
As I looked - the other guy's eyes viewed her - he frowned
"You slept with my wife!" He claimed while enraged
I said, "Wait...she's your wife?" Not remembering the blame
He looked at me and pointed the gun in my face
"She's the pride of my life and this is how I'm repaid?"
I stared him straight - didn't take away my eyes for a second
And at that time - Nikki awoke and was restless
She broke into tears - I didn't know what to think
Suddenly I felt a thump and fell to his feet
Pistol whipped to the ground - he aimed the gun on me
Nikki screamed, "No don't, Al, this was all me"
I looked up - he said, "Freeze" - Nikki got on her knees
And pleaded, "Al, he doesn't know about you and me"
My eyes opened wide as I tried to see
The situation was blurry - but not visually
I was searching for clarity but none could be attained
Nikki maintained that it was her fault for the exchange
And Al began to slowly make a connection
He looked sorrowful in a state of recollection
But immediately he pointed the gun back in my direction
"This man beat me" He said, "He needs to be taught a lesson
\"We didn't do ****," Nikki screamed, "He just helped me out
You were drunk - had an accident and he stopped on his route
Pulled me out" "But you both ganged up on me"
Al replied in retaliation to Nikki's speech
"You were drunk, and you were gonna get us killed
And look at you still - this time a gun what's the deal?
Just drop it," Nikki squealed - but Al wouldn't yield
Just aimed at me and wanted me to use my head as a shield
I looked around for a chance to attack
Nikki saw me - and I could see that she had a plan
"I love you" she said and Al turned his head
Success - I tackled Al...BANG - I heard lead...
I felt my chest - but I didn't get hit
I looked up and Al simply looked like ****
But he wasn't hurt so I turned around
"Oh God" I let out - Nikki took the round
She fell down - I let out a burst of tears
Al dropped the pistol and cursed out with fear
The last words I heard were "I love you" again
She was staring at me to the very end
So now every time I hear Sinatra sing
I think of Nikki eternally - she lives within me

Love was just a glance away,
A warm embracing dance away and -
Ever since that night we've been together.
Lovers at first sight, in love forever.
It turned out so right,
For strangers in the night.

Whoops. Typo, lulz. I wrote it in the summer of '05, I meant. A little less than three years ago.

And no recording. It's not a song-song. It's just the lyrics and words to one. I was trying to get all my feelings out at the time I wrote it. Did a few more in '06, and then almost completely stopped. Just wanted some feedback on this one. :]

Well there's more than enough feelings in it, but I can't really feel what it would sound like, because I'd really have to hear it. Can you just make a recording? Or let someone who can sing make one (in case you can't)

Wow, fena...just wow.

I've read it twice already, and I really adore it. Hit a few tender spots for me, but thrilled to read it. I've got piles and piles of poems and short stories like this tucked away in notebooks. You've got more nerve than me to post it here. <3

I did have some trouble with the structure of it. Some parts had a smooth flow, y'know? Reading semi-aloud quite a few parts had a rhythmic flow that just rolled off the tongue. I got snagged in a few spots but none the less, it was great, imho.

Thanks Elikapeka. :]
This is supposed to be the Artists Corner here, isn't it? I think sometimes that we have quite a bit of talent in here - not just when it comes to digital art. But most of the times, we're simply too shy to share them. Maybe post some of yours? <3

And I know what you mean by the flow being a bit rough in some places. The thing is, as Twelve was pointed out, I wrote this as a song, but without ever having the intention of making it into a song-song, if that makes any sense whatsoever. First of all, it's too long to be conventional. Secondly, I don't have a voice to sing, and while I know a few people that can sing very well, I'd rather not have them sing it. More for a selfish reason than anything else. When it comes to art, my standards are actually quite high.
But the thing is, if it really were a song, you could make a lot of things work, you know? When you're reading it out loud in a rhythmic beat, some bars might not fit into the rhythm. But with instrumentals and a background... you could make a lot of magic happen.
