First let's face the truth, then we'll talk about theory later.
http://www.darndivorce.com/divorce-rate ... -the-world
http://www.divorcemag.com/statistics/statsWorld.shtml

So, as you can see, the divorce rate is extremely high in America North and Eastern Europe, which are developed countries. Explain?
You also notice that in these countries, most ppl belong to no religion. We can guess that religion play an important role in maintaining the stability of a couple. India, is a quite populate country, yet got the lowest divorce rate. First it's a sin (coz they believe in god and dont wanna offend him). Second, ppl there care about a happy life than a material life. Some of you must probably questioning by this time "how could i have a happy life if i don't money?". You tell me.

Quote:
Silo talks about people first meeting and falling in love, and then losing some of that love over time... so therefore they're "not really in love". Well personally I think that's normal. It doesn't mean you love the person any less. It just means you're getting to know that person more, and finding things you may not like as much about the other person as you once thought you did. That doesn't mean you love them any less. You love someone "even though they..." not "because they..."

That's what they should do, but did they really think like that? A person can be represented by a % of good and bad. When you fully know someone, you know his bad part. In this case could be called a love because you accept the wholeness of a person. But many cases show that ppl tend to show his good part before they are getting married, and then later and later show their real nature. If the % of the bad become more bigger than the partner thought, it would generally lead to misunderstandings and divorces. As you see, a person choose another person to be his bf/gf depends on how much % good he has. By 'good' I mean the part of personality (including material) that other person like.
It hard to fully know someone, that's why ppl usually love each other "because of smt..." (usually because of his good part), when you dont full know someone, you can't talk about "because who he/she is".

First of in India people are basically forced to marry by their parents (Most of them)
Sweden and America have their religion bu most of them don't give a crap about it.
You don't need a lot of money to be happy, i can't say homeless people can't fall in love because they can. But the problem is surviving.

lol I hate it when people say stupid shit like this. What does religion have anything to do with divorce rates? Are you saying that atheists/non-religious people lead immoral lives?

Lol fucking Silo...I swear. Just when I thought he cannot possibly sink any lower into his ocean of stupidity, he manages to do so once more. It's pretty goddamn astounding if you ask me.

So Silo, you're basically saying that in order for my girlfriend and myself to have a stable relationship, we should stop being atheists and pick a religion (Hinduism)? Lol.

Let me put my exact feelings upon reading that statement into simple words:

Go fuck yourself.

Silo is half right and half wrong. As he pointed out in India religion is so powerfull that ppl will marry and stay married even whitout loving other becouse of fear of God. But in places where religion is not so meaningfull (western society mostly) ppl marry and stay together becouse of love.

So in the end, he's wrong, and Indians are living the wrong way. Basically, they are being controlled by religion - even when a spouse is truly unworthy of marriage, they will stick with it and suffer for the rest of their lives.

Using religion as a pretext/justification for anything doesnt work. If a human being's natural, basic sense of right and wrong, morals and immorals dont exist, religion wont get the message across. Its far easier to acknowledge life lessons by yourself/from your parents and live the rest of your life ethically and spend that Sunday morning with your kids.

Define wrong way.

And silo wasn't wrong. Religion does affect on divorce rates. But you can't generalise things.

They are, in essence, allowing religion to control their lives. Yes, God exists, but like I said, Indians refusing to compromise a bad marriage are preventing themselves from making rational decisions.

I agree that their way of living sucks etc. But saying that they are living in "wrong way" is kinda harsh. Human chooses what's his right way of living by himself.

And no, God doesn't exist.

I definitely think religion should be something you use to possibly enhance your relationships, not something you use to base your entire relationship on. If you can't maintain your loving relationship without religion, perhaps it was never meant to be. You shouldn't be with your spouse or gf/bf because of fear of God.

Just a little side note on religion. Granted, I do have Christian religious beliefs myself, but I do like George Carlin's take on religion.

Spoiler!

You are right. I personally think that religion is bullshit and nothing should be based on it. I just told how things are, not how they should be.

Dont mistake me, Im not religious at all - I dont practice anything. But there is a God. He just doesnt do anything. Hes just there.

Actually you are all wrong. Arranged marriages are a social custom not a religious one. the lack of divorce is also a social custom, not a religious one. Those who divorce bring shame upon upon their entire families and are often disowned and shunned. Factor in the traditionally women have very little say in how the relationship goes and that men are more likely to be the ones causing problems this creates an atmosphere of a male dominated one sided marriage system. But none of this is religion. Just customs. People in the US used t be similar. Despite the wrong doings of a husband it would have been frowned upon for a owmen to leave the relationship. Parents stuck together for traditional reasons. Nowadays people get together and have effed up lives and just get divorced whenever.

this is true but in the case of India and other societies like it, it is not the wrath of god that is keeping couples together but the social shame that accompanies divorce which keeps them together....

Right. Evolution is theory. Big Bang is theory...

But hey, let's not turn this into a discussion of science vs religion again. Coz no one will win.
