That's exactly what the dissease is about, she can't stop. No matter what her parents say or do, or how they raised her, she can't stop herself from saying those things. It's the nature of the disease. In this case it's the n-wrd, in other cases it's bitch, penis, vagina, whatever.
Tourette patients can't stop the signal that makes them speak up. They don't want to say those words, in fact, a lot of tourette patients get depressed, become very unhappy, because they honestly understand they're hurting people, yet can't do anything about it.
You sound like you would be open to the idea that people are saying their kids have tourette's in place of admitting there was a failure somewhere in their child's upbringing. I would agree with this but I doubt you actually are open to that idea.

From what I've read and heard about Tourette's, this sort of behavior is considered to be rare. Most people with it go undiagnosed because their related actions are seemingly common and unnoticeable things, like blinking for example.

Don't you think blurting out the N word among other things would get tiring after seven years? I mean you may enjoy it at first but it would grow old fast.
Grow up

Depends, it's a violent compulsion which can be limited to a selection of words as well. Plus, all these documentary's only show the footage they've selected, as u can imagine, her saying bitch in public wouldn't be as controversial. Allthough i do believe they show footage of her using different words as well.

I'm not saying the disease isn't real. I'm saying out of the people with it, those who happen to yell the n-word or other shit like that are rare. Rare enough for me to call BS.
The n-word is actually not at all that rare with tourette patients. Furthermore, it's easy to just call bullshit, but backing it up is a whole different story. Again, the n-word is nice and controversial, i'm quite sure she uses other words as well, as most patients do. I believe this is part of a series, cause i've seen the same girl, on a couch, with her mom, usin different words as wel.
Furthermore, assuming she's faking it in this case would be mad. They don't JUST make documentary's about people faking a very real disease. I'm quite sure like every dissease it's measurable, it's a malfunction in certain signals sent to the brain, which they have ways of showing for these days. She's probably been tested over and over again, they actually have for this documentary, which is logical as they set out to make the public understand the disease. Which would also involve the question: "what causes it"?. Hint: It isn't puberty.

No worries Verfo, what matters more is the fact that other members cannot read my posts because of the brightness of the font colouring i used. It would be senseless and dumb to continue posting in such an bright color, and would ultimately only escalate into scenario's which would be even more unnecessary, and may even lead to my first warning ever. And since i take pride in my no warning experiences to this forum day, it's absolutely not a problem to seek out one simple colour which does not project the same kind of strain to their eyes.
And on a small side note, i think i just found it

Side note @ grimjaw: You keep saying I'm wrong, but what's wrong with my explanation? It might not be how it is all the time or it might not be 100% correct, but at least it's an explanation, and at least it makes sense, I don't see you coming up with anything.
Anyways, I imagine a way to prevent tourrettes is to not put so much emphasis on words being bad. As a parent, you shouldn't encourage your kids to say **** and ***** and bitch and shit, but you don't have to be like "YOU CAN NEVER SAY THIS EVER OR I WILL GROUND YOU FOR A YEAR!!!!" Then it won't be such a heavy thing on their mind and tourrettes may not form. It makes sense, at least to me. @grimjaw again, my explanation makes sense because why do you think tourrettes people always say bad words? It's because they know it's bad and they're trying not to, but they just have to, I don't think any tourrettes people have to say stuff like "howdy". Also, your text is kind of annoying, I agree with what dom said. It's not so much just the hurting of my eyes, but why would you take time out of your posting life to add a color and italics to all of your posts? Pointless imo.
Priam, stop trying to be whatever you're trying to be, and stop being so closed minded, you think you're the one who is open minded, but you're not, because you are exluding the possibility that it could be cured or faked or whatever, you just auto assume it's always real and incurable and all that jazz. Now I'm not saying it's faked often, but I'm sure it is a bit, and I'm sure it can be cured, or at least prevented.

didnt read your whole post but that last part, and didnt they say there is no cure YET, and how do you prevent it if your born with it, unless your really determined and have self control and still it will be very hard.

I guess there's really no profit to be gained by suger coating it anymore, since most people already saw the previous posts i contributed. I got diagnosed as Gifted when i reached my early teens. However it's limited to certain fields, and i was reluctant to post in this manner because of reception issues, i have had my share of those experiences in my early teens. And quite frankly seeing Da_Realest, Barotix, and Grandpa post in their respective ways gave me the motivation i previously lacked. But i sincerely hope you won't take my posts as forms of arrogance, because when i do decide to place them in this field, they leave my head with the best of intentions. They are not meant to seek out duelism or confrontations, and certainly not to create distances from other members. In fact, i despise the spotlight position.
I just felt so constricted, that i decided to free myself from those shackles.

It's not about me being open minded, i was merely sating the nature of the disease. I'm excluding the possibility of a cure, BECAUSE THERE ISN'T ONE. How hard can that be to understand. It's a syndrom that can't be cured, nor prevented. If a Tourette kid gets a word in his/her head, You can shout whatever you like as a parent, It's NOT gonna help. They can't control themselves. Which is the point of the entire disease.
Let's sum that up shall we.
1) Can't be prevented, not by parents, and not by any superhero alive. 2) Can't be cured. 3) Difficult to be controlled. There are drugs that lessen the symptoms, but won't take them away. 4) Tourette patients get noticed, and tested most of the times, so it's hard to fake. It's a neurological problem, which can be measured. 5) In some cases, it wont be words though, as Reise pointed out, It can be uncontrolled blinking as well. Tourette's has 'motor tics' and 'vocal tics', combined or seperated. Where motor represents uncontrolled body movement, and vocal several wordly obscenitie's.
Moving on. It's been said tourette is inflicted upon someone when exposed to deep (di)stress. However a lot of the people having the disease we're born with it. Medics are still unsure about how this happens, and again, there is NO cure.
On a different note: Being whoever i'm trying to be? You mean like the person whom read up on the subject, and you didn't.. right? You should be happy i responded normally to your post this time, not calling you an idiot. Cause this was yet another post of yours that warranted such a reply.
Seriously, grounding a tourette patient for cursing on people, is like grounding a terminal patient because they're dying. It's rediculous.

I'm actually very open to that idea, i just won't make it look as common as you're doing right now. I fully believe there are people out there whom totally messed up there children, and have been hiding the abuse (Cause that's what is is eventually) under the blanket called 'a disease'. Especially with ADHD. Several friends of mine, whom don't have any of the symptoms, claim to have ADHD cause there parents told them so.
I just think that calling this girl a fraud, based on that idea is going a bit far. She has been severely testes, monitored, whatever, the documentary also involves explaining the disease, where it comes from, expert reviews, etc. She's for real.

What some people aren't grasping here is that tourettes comes in multiple levels. Random cussing is uncontrollable and at the absolute end of the spectrum. It's *very* easy to tell between a faked tourettes, and a real tourettes. People who cuss out generally have other symptoms too, such as twitching and not being able to sit still too long. I know about the last two, my friend has that minor form of tourettes.
Those of you who are saying she's faking, grow up. Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean she's faking it. Go study some things on the brain and maybe you can understand the concept of muscle spasming. That's a *very* rough idea of what it is. Mental spasms on the vocab. Not all tourette victims shout obscenities, though that is the most stereotyped version of it. Like Priam said, drugs can control it slightly, but not stop it.
Again, just because YOU haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
