stuff about research

Well, they didn't say much about being more "productive" or financially "secure" but they did manage to show that rich iPhone owners tend to be idiots without college degrees. I also enjoyed the part where it said "US adults with a PART TIME or full time job" then went on to list "Income over $70k a year". Not exactly good for a base of study.

I'm looking at the first image I posted and iPhone owners have a higher college education percentage. Just sayin'. I would say you're misinterpreting the chart but I'm not about begin discussing semantics over this. XD Take it how you will! I know I did, and I couldn't care less for it. =) (But you did request it, which is why I searched for it in the first place.)

Yes, but what it's actually saying is a little more than 1 out of every 2 people you see with an iPhone won't be college educated. I'd expect the percentage to be lower with other phones simply because they're more prevalent.

That was my initial reaction to that as well but I then I just concluded that the study is overall, well, crap. There's so many factors we don't know about that can be more revealing about the data. One that comes to mind is the location of the study, or if it was on the internet or in stores or something. Certain sites make users complete surveys before allowing them to view a part of the website which could drastically alter the results because many people give false info just to meet a certain criteria. There are way too many loose ends to come to a solid conclusion if there even is one with this particular study. (Maybe they made it vague on purpose to persuade people to buy the study? XD) I'll admit that the implications of the study are what prompted me to cite it in the first place, but I wouldn't say I agree with the data. (Not just the education part but the whole thing in general)

OP: I have arrived to the conclusion that you should get a computer with Linux. It's cheap, flexible, and it usually never leads to the derailing of your thread. 8)

I'm planning on getting my major in computer science at college and am also planning on getting a new computer. I was wondering, between windows and mac, whether there was any advantage in using one or the other for whatever programming assignments classes will require.

For the most part, class descriptions point to using UNIX/linux for programming in languages such as C++, java, etc. And it's possible to run these operating systems in either windows or mac, so does it really matter what type of computer I get?

Any advice on this is appreciated.

Well you said yourself that class descriptions point to using UNIX and Linux. I think you can install Linux onto a Mac (without using a virtual machine) but I'm not sure about UNIX. Maybe you can. You'd probably be better off with a PC running Linux since that's what your classes require. Maybe even dual boot Windows and Linux so you can run either OS natively if needed instead of in a VM.

I had to make this decision too. I chose a PC, because for about the same price I could get the most high end parts available. I really love the customizability of a PC. Plus my father's MacPro needed to be sent to apple for repairs for the 3rd time this month, though their service is great, I could go in and watch them repair all kinds of Mac's.
But the price/performance ratio of a Mac isn't very good
