It was one of the best movies I've ever seen. Going back some time next week to watch it in IMAX.

I need opinions on wether this movie is worth watching in 3D. Still can't decide wether to watch it in 2D or 3D. Thanks.

3D adds to the experience but not much...Well, it makes you feel like you're actually there at some parts. It's still a great movie in 2D. However, if you have the choice to see the IMAX 3D version, that is easily better than 2D version and the normal 3D version.

just came back from watching it. i have to say that my mind was blown! it was very very good imo. i was hesitant at first to watch it, i assumed it would only be 'good graphics's but i was wrong ;P from the beginnig to the end, i was totally engaged. i found myself smiling through most of the film.

story was cliche but the use of 3D and the excellent CGI really helped immerse you in the world he created. I would recommend it to anyone who hadn't seen it but sadly the story was so formulaic and predictable im not sure if i would bother watching it again unless i was going to see a different version (IMAX). The acting and the graphics and really everything else besides the story is 10/10, and its not even a bad story just...an old one with no new twist...

Funny story: My friends and I saw it last night at our local theater and at the end this old guy behind us comments to his friend "You know, I think the 3D effects were a bit disconcerting" (It's our local theater that does not do, and never has done 3D)

It's 2009. I thought we gave bonus points for a story being creative not subtracted points if it wasn't. Everything has been done already in some type of media. To be fair, in this day and age it's all about execution and I think that many can agree that the story of Avatar was executed fairly well. I knew what was going to happen for the most part but that didn't prevent the movie from being any less engaging.

Clearly you haven't seen alot of films in 2009 if you still think formulaic stories are acceptable. While not the greatest year in film 2009 had a few good gems Moon, Precious, TDK, Hurtlocker, The Hangover...most of these were films of a familiar genre but told a different story in a different way. So yeah, creativity in story writing is in no way a dead artform and imo a movie loses points for it when it follows the mold so precisely. In my head i was literally going well then this happens, then this, then that, etc...
like i said if you haven't you should see it because Cameron created a beautiful film with unique locations and settings...i just which he spent half of that time on how the story unfolds. Of all the movies which employ this formula this is clearly the best one by far but it detracts from the experience when a story is so copy and pasted...

I'm sure I've seen a story very similar to Precious on the Lifetime channel... As far as the others, I haven't seen. I'm not saying creativity is dead and you should settle for mediocrity but I don't think it is wise to expect a movie to be creative in this day and age if the directors aren't going to confine themselves to a narrow construct(i.e The Hangover) otherwise you're going to be repeatedly disappointed.
An old story retold in a new skin. I see it as being no different than the epics that heavily resemble the Odyssey and just the formulaic nature of epic poetry in general. They're still great epics.
I'll make it clear that I'm not trying to specifically defend Avatar, but any movie that decides to use a sort of familiar story. But of course, this is just my opinion...

actually i called both of those predictions based on the formulaic story and simple character archetypes. Also i doubt you've seen a story like Precious on Lifetime, those are normal uplifting tales to inspire. Precious was more of a story about life is hard but you play the cards dealt or don't play at all.
That aside all of this is my opinion. As a person who enjoys alot of movies from every genre and has an appreciation for them as a form of art i think its hard to make a formulaic story original, but thats the mark of a good movie. I can often judge what i'm getting into before i get there so im never really disappointed and i didn't expect much from Avatar. With all the hype i was expecting typical run and gun action with alot of effects to hold it together instead of characters/plot. I don't think it hit the mark. When something comes close to perfection their flaws become magnified and all the more noticeable. I think that the acting with great, the pacing was great, the setting was great. Cameron made a really fantastic looking movie and assembled a great group of people...i just wish he hadn't given then such a generic plot with generic lines...for me that flaw is extremely hard to overlook considering the effort that went into every other part of the movie.

This movie is the best movie i have seen in god knows how long 10/10 easily and cant wait for a dvd release, curios to how the sequals are going to play out they may not be as good as i feel the story can end in the first one
