Using windows for its compatibility. I have been using Linux in the past but just got too lazy <.< Maybe will be going back to it. Not seeing myself using vista anytime soon. Some of my friends say it is too big brother-ish :?

I've used Vista a little and I haven't been too impressed. I know my manager uses Vista on his laptop and he hates it. He ordered an XP CD from our IT guys to "downgrade" to XP Pro because in his opinion Vista is "horrible". It locks up on him a lot, and has a bad habit of not saving files out to network shares on our Windows Server 2003 file server. Whenever you try, it claims that the folder you're trying to save into does not exist, or gives permission errors.

There really are no permission errors. It's a known problem in Vista that requires a registry hack. The lock-up problems are not because of hardware either. It's a brand new laptop with good specs, either dual core or core 2 duo and 2 gigs ram. XP will just FLY on that thing I think.

I wouldn't want to use Vista until, MAYBE, SP1 comes out. Maybe.

@Innovacious Ok I didn't realize AMD owns ATI. =P

Not necessarily. And even if so, with some tweaks it runs at 100mb-300mb at most.

Linux is the operating system kernel, or the core. Ubuntu is a Linux distro, which is like one of the many flavors of Linux. Ubuntu is (I think) the most user-friendly Linux distro to date.

Personally, I prefer Macs. =) Running on Leopard 10.5.4. :D

GAH! Uninstalled Ubuntu. Took too long to boot compared to XP. But everything else was better(IMO), I just can't stand long boot times.

Yeah that's the beauty of Linux. If it's eating too much RAM or other resources, you can just modify it. Strip out what you don't need. Recompile the kernel with support for only the hardware you use. Shut down unnecessary services (you can do that in Windows too, but it seems so many are "necessary")... Use a smaller, less resource hungry desktop environment (fluxbox, icewm, and the like).

Some distros are better than others in that respect if you really want to get your hands dirty and know what you're doing. Gentoo is a good example of this.

There could be many reasons for the long boot time. Ubuntu always came up quick for me on my Athlon XP 3200+ with 512 megs RAM. Maybe it's taking a while searching for a DHCP address? I wouldn't necessarily avoid a distro because of boot times. It could probably be shortened.

No offence, but MAC OS on systems not screwed up by students at your school, do not ever crash when opening PS.

Granted, the school's system/network administrators should be competent enough to configure their MAC OS systems to prevent [most] students from screwing them up. ;-)

Apparantly not. Oh, how hard it is to find competent people these days.

Of course you can. MACs aren't immune to misconfigurations, viruses, hacks, etc. :P
