Yoake Mae Yori Ruri Iro Na, a romantic comedy
Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru, comedy
Shuffle!, romantic comedy; harem; ecchi; BUT its REALLY GOOD, the Shuffle memories is just a recap, so no need to watch it
ef ~ a tale of memories ~, romance, and its a tear jerker
Murder Princess, one of the shortest, coolest, action anime i've seen so far, you won't be disappointed
Yeah, have fun dud, i wouldn't post the other ecchi ones you won't like =P

I myself enjoy the list of "overrated" anime I mentioned. You're advise sounds better since watching the popular ones first will save you from the chances of getting spoiled. Yup. Save the rare ones for later.

Im a big ghost in the shell fan. Personally i say watch the first and second movie ( the second is far the best ) than if you like it watch the stand alone complex ( not the second gig ). Its my kind of tv, a physiological anime with still a lot of blatant blood wherever it may fit in. Works for me.

You missed FLCL. That's probably the best short anime by far. xD And to add to the list: Cowboy Bebop
