Basically, it's taking only the cream of the crop, the best of the best, to cherry pick people. It would be an idealistic world filled with only elites, a world rid of idiots.
Exactly lol.

I would hope that in this situation that I would be able to resist placing my personal benefit over someone's life.
It would be more interesting to put two people into the same room and whichever one presses the button will get a million dollars, and the one that does not will die.

I won't do it, because there is a chance you might kill someone you know, friends or love ones or even urself, its meaningless to have money when you don't have good company to share it with.
For those who are thinking of pressing it 99999999 times, think again.

Let me ask it to you guys in a different way:
Would you want to become a murderer for $1,000,000?
I personally wouldn't, I know I couldn't have fun wihh that money, my conscience would kill me.
That's something totally different, as you kill that person personally and so you'll know who you killed. If you could just press a button, without knowing who died and get that money, I would press that button yes.

I said no as well but what you said it just about 1 in a million chances. I won't even do it if it kills someone that i don't know or never going to know. Just saying, because you seems like meaning "I'd do it if it was not someone close to me"

No, I would not press the button, that would weigh on my conscious forever, I'd be responsible for the death of a fellow human being.
I agree, there are too many selfish people in this world (not directing this at anyone). A lot of people here are saying, as long as it's no one I knew, then I would press it. But what about the friends and family of the person who you killed? What if someone else pressed it, and killed your mother, or son/daugther? Would you be angry at them for pressing it? Imo you can't put a price on someones life.
Are you both that narrow minded? Push button, give to charity and save >1000 lives. Is one life worth more than 1000 lives? If you had a choice, kill one person or kill 1000 people which would it be? What about kill yourself or kill a million?
Not everyone said they'd use the money for themselves..
plus there's the chance you kill someone like osama bin ladin or some shit.
You know..I've actually thought about that, but the sole thought that I have killed someone won't let me push the button. It's not about killing and being afraid of getting caught. It's just about killing.
This leads me to ask you guys a question: are you actually able to kill?
Perspective changes in the following two cases: 1) I push the button, but I DO NOT know that I've killed someone, nor I ever will -> I'd donate those million dollars to charity.
2) I push the button, but I DO NOT know that I've killed someone, eventually finding it out -> even after donating that much money (which I would any case), I'd feel miserable, whoever I've killed.
This might sound harsh, but no one ever deserves to die, not even the guy you mentioned, Bin Laden, even though he destroyed thousands of lives. That's just my opinion, though.

wtf are you a humanist or something? You believe even the most evil humans have good inside them? Its people like you is the reason why we can't execute rapists/killers/corrupt people and instead throw them in jail only for them to suck out hard-earned taxpayer money for the rest of their life.
If we could catch bin laden/kim jong il/george bush alive, I would return all the crimes of humanity they have committed back into their face.

I guess my conscious just weighs on me more than some of you people. This is directed at the people saying "you wouldn't even know who you killed so it's no problem." That would not matter, just knowing the fact that I ended another human being's life just for money would be enough.
Ah, and to address Jstar's point, since I am one of the other few who wouldn't press it. No, I'm not like that, I don't think everyone deserves to just live it out in jail, but I'm not just going to condemn some random person and their family to death simply because I'm a greedy bastard.

Some of us are just more realistic than others.
Eh, realistic ... I think we all know the majority of human beings are inclined towards disassociated care...
normally, people don't give 2 shits about someone they don't know and I think everyone can agree on that part...
but still the fact remains, even if you don't know this unknown individual, you're responsible for their death, not personally (w/ your own hands), but you, generally speaking, drew the cards on the table for some thing we put a lot of value in in trade for an irreplaceable life, however large or small people could deem it worth...
and no, I'm not a humanist

Yes, I am. And yes, I do believe it as no one's born evil. Just to quote Rousseau, the man was born free, but he is everywhere in chain. You figure it out.

Guess in Europe it works differently than in the USA where Death Penality should be abolished to even be considered as a modern country. Do you know how many innocents die because of this barbarian use you Americans've got?
You know what? I'm finding hard time writing something that would prove my point, as you and a lot of people 'tlooks, are way too materialistic and selfish (just note out, I ain't religious, so don't bring that thing on), but if your law is something like "eye for an eye", I just simply pity you.
