"display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding" it then successfully recovers or not.

It all started when i installed WotLK on my laptop. I dunno if it was the duel boxing or the LK installation or it might have been neither or both but a bit after that i started getting that error and my screen would **** up then go blank then go back to normal and that message would prompt. Then it got worse. When it would happen my screen would go blank and then my computer would restarted and there would be minor graphic errors on the screen. Then it got to the point where windows itself would not start. Eventually i did a system recovery and restored my system back to its original factory shipped state. All of this escalated in a very short amount of time, the point where the screen would go black to the no-start up was only a day and this whole ordeal took about a week.

I called HP and of course some guy over in India picked up the phone and we had a nice time mispronouncing the name "Carl" and confusing our m's and n's and out b's and d's. After going through alot of stuff that did nothing i was still getting the error even after the system recovery so he wanted me to open it up. I couldn't do it because i didn't have a screw driver of the proper size. At this point im running on lack of sleep on an already farked sleep schedule and nothing but a diet of kool-aid and doritos...


i need the slightest bit of clue as to what the **** is happening on my laptop, any idea would be helpful as long its, you know, a constructive one...if you don't have any idea what your talking about just don't say anything....

Could you post your laptop's make and model? Maybe I can help you. =)

Did you try reinstalling nvidia drivers btw? Apparently there is an issue with this driver and Vista that is causing this process to malfunction.

Is the wireless connection in your laptop still functional? It may seem irrelevant but it's actually a major issue in some HP laptops.

Yes, it's definitely a driver issue conflicting with Vista 64-bit. It occurs mostly to laptops that are used for gaming and after a while this driver starts failing. My advice is to first try a driver reinstall from the official nvidia website and the problem still persists then I recommend you reformat and install Vista 32-bit or even XP if you'd like. Unfortunately, I don't see any other options than this. =(

*sigh* i wonder if my warranty would cover a downgrade like that, probably not....reinstall the drivers huh.....*sigh*

You actually lucked out. o,O My dad's HP laptop was one of the many with a motherboard issue (I checked and yours wasn't on the list) that HP would fix for free so I had to send it in for repairs. I got a call around 4 days later that they found water stains inside the laptop so the free repair would now cost $750. T_T

Today one of my external hard drives gave out on me and I lost around 100 gigs of high def movies. =(

just to be clear on this, the problem is the result of a conflict between vista 64-bit and my video card drivers, which means in order to rectify this problem i would have to get rid of one or the other? can you give me a link or something to someplace with some discussion on the topic, my friend goes to a tech school and im sure someone there could do something about either issue but i'd like to know more about whats going on...

So far I haven't found any clear solution for this issue because all these things seem to vary from person to person. I see one website saying 64-bit is bad, then I go somewhere else and they say it's both 64-bit and 32-bit versions going haywire. =.=

Here are some discussions on the issue;

Here are other possible solutions that have worked for other people
- Turning off Windows Aero and using Windows Classic (fixes issue partially or not at all. Varies from person to person)
- Turning off UAC (Strangely enough there has been reports that this also fixes the issue partially)
- Uninstalling hotfix KB952287 (A lot of people have reported this past hotfix could have something to do with the issue although many also report that no change happens after the uninstall of this hotfix. To uninstall; Go to Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Windows Updates > View update history. Look for hotfix KB952287 and uninstall it. Results vary.)
- Installing another Microsoft hotfix (Hotfix 1: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938194. Results vary.)
- Another solution here (http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/asp ... mkm-s.aspx . Results vary.)

There is no real clear-cut solution to this issue and I'm not even sure nvidia or Microsoft have put out a permanent fix for this. I'll try to keep searching and see if I can find a solution for future reference on this problem.
