Do I just suck at driving?

Basically I hit 2 slick spots and almost spun out on both of them in the span of 30 seconds. No damage but my license plate fell off when I hit a bush.

I was hitting my breaks cause it was quite a large hill and I didn't want to go too fast in snowy conditions and of course I lost traction, I ease up on brakes and keep my steering wheel straight but I spin anyways, so I turn towards spin and gently tap breaks. I still go out. No damage, I back up, and try again, 10 seconds later, same thing happens, the hell am I supposed to do?

If your rear wheels skid...

1. Take your foot off the accelerator.
2. Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they're sliding right, steer right.
3. If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.
4. If you have standard brakes, pump them gently.
5. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse — this is normal.

If your front wheels skid...

1. Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but don't try to steer immediately.
2. As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in "drive" or release the clutch, and accelerate gently.

If you get stuck...

1. Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper.
2. Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.
3. Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out.
4. Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car.
5. Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction.
6. Try rocking the vehicle. (Check your owner's manual first — it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you're in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.

Avoid hills with slick conditions on them? Gravity + no traction isn't that great of a combo.

Thats true, in some cases.. but its bloody hard to do. Reflexes always tell ya to brake instead.

Get some good snow tires and it wont be a problem, they will drastically increase the traction you have on the road.

For going up hills get a speed and hold it constant do not add to it or break just keep going. Or else you will slide around.
(I live on a hill also and this works.)

when its snowing and really icy, drive at less than 10 mph, thats what I do and theres almost no problems. The most important thing is that you don't do anything fast with the car because at low speed you can still control it. When you start going faster its very hard to control. And if theres a cunt behind you honking, don't get pressured to go faster. You do whats right for you

1) Don't use your brakes, put the car in 1st gear only, use engine braking, not with the pedal.
2) Get snow tires, your tires have no traction.. Can't afford snow tires? Chain them.
3) If you accelerate, you might as well have a death wish.
4) Do NOT slam on the brakes, do you even have ABS?

when my dad bought his a6 quattro, we were told that with four
wheel drive, the car straightens itself by accellerating. so yes,
they litterally told us to accellerate when we get into a spin.
