Its how black guys were called back in slavery basicly, it just depends on how you say it...
If you say "ey, whats up my *****" its obiously very different from using it in a racist way.
The black friends i got have no prob with it if i say it.

If you are dutch and i call you a cheesehead, its offending, though when a friend would say the same thing to you it's ok coz its ment in a different way.

(could you really not figure that out yourself? meh)

It was originally a derogatory term for blacks...high emphasis on the bolded word.

Note, there's a slight different between the -er ending and the -a ending.

-er's still derogatory....-a's used moreso in place of "friend / that person".

I find the whole use embarrashing...

A favorite quote of mine ~

"What are you? So fulla hate you just want to go out and fight everybody cuz you been whipped and chased by hounds. Well, that might not be livin', but it sure as hell ain't dyin'. And dyin's what these white boys been doin' for goin' on three years now. Dyin' by the thousands, dyin' for you, fool. I know cuz I dug the graves. And all the time I'm diggin' I'm asking myself: 'When. When O' Lord is it gonna be our time?' Times comin' when we gonna have to ante up. Ante up and kick in like men. LIKE MEN! You watch who you call a ******. If there's any ******* around here, it's you. Smart-mouthed, stupid-***, swamp runnin ******. If you ain't careful, that's all you ever gonna be."

Because they hold a double standard to the word. They also hold a grudge against white people for enslaving them all those years ago.

The only ones who fit the description you gave are the ignorant ones. Any educated, smart black man will never call his friend that.

Me...I'm white and I call my white friends that. Out of respect and lulz.

I hope you legitimately dont know what i means.
But yeah.
It's like alot of other words, its not THAT you say it, its HOW you say it.

Also it's just like I wouldnt call an asian "yo asian" but an other asian can say it to another.
It's just how touchy the subject is about the differences of race.

I can call my black friends the N word.
Cos they know I'm just playing.

And they'll take offence.

Its an ugly word. There is no difference. One is just the other with a different dialect, thats it. Some black people think its ok to say it, that its meaning has changed and blah blah blah but it hasn't because if it has when a white person said it they wouldn't be offended. Other black people make note of the fact that it is perhaps the ugliest word in the english language, don't use it at all, and HATE hearing other black people use it and HATE even more hearing white people use it because they hear black people use it. I think long ago some black people thought they could take the word back or something but really its becoming more and more apparent thats not possible, the word will probably never die but i don't speak it, i hate hearing it and most of all i hate thinking it because it just brings my mind back to old places and old ways and stories of the past that will only turn me into some kind of bitter bigot...

so don't say it period. Its not ok in either form and just because some black people think its cool and some white ppl think its cool doesn't mean you should go mouthing it off at all because your going to offended someone so clearly its not as cool as either side is pretending it to be.

and unless your black don't even think you really understand the impact that word has. It is embedded deep within our culture and our history, very deep and few people of other cultures take the time to go enough into ours to even brush an understanding of what its like to have a word like that around. So if your not black don't come here talking about how black people feel and blah blah blah cause thats just BS you thought up on your own because i know most of you are just 13 year old white boys who don't even care one way or the other....

nice glory quote btw...took me a sec to remember

Its the context behind a word that determines its impact, not the physical word itself. You will do well to remember it. Sadly, the people who get angry over such things are often too immature to realize this, oh well.

I personally don't like the word but if you're really curious about it, some people would justify its use saying that it depends on the context - that simply making the "r" silent on certain social situations would make such a huge difference. It may for them and it may not for others.
