I live in Queens, NY so there's no hunting here - I don't think it's legal to own a gun either unless you're an authorized government employee (NYPD). So I might have to go upstate or some other state for it. Not gonna' do it anytime soon. Just curious if it's legal in case I feel like doing it in the future.

No guns are allowed (under limits) all around US, the 2nd amendment says all US citizens have the right to have guns for self defense.

Not where I live, sir. Unless you're licensed to own for your profession or government related purposes.

You can't own one in D.C.

I really don't trust the same people who think it's perfectly okay to let rapists and murderers out after a few years in prison, only to commit the same crime over again. The same government that funds and bumps up criminals on the organ transplant list due to bullshit "human rights" technicality. The same morons who think that criminals shouldn't be killed when they trespass into your house unless they kill, harm or try to kill 1 of the people living there - as if a complete stranger invading your home wasn't bad enough. Complete bullshit.
Anyway..topic sort of derailed.
So....is it legal to use a handgun or a machine gun to hunt deer and bears?

Sure it is, just don't get caught
Anyway, as stated, it depends by state, check your own state's laws.

I am pretty sure they sued the D.C. people, it went to the Supreme Court, who ruled in favor with the people suing D.C.,saying the ban is unconstitutional, so guns are allowed again, not 100% sure though. Btw if thats the case inky go sue them you will win

I guess I'll have to include hunting animals with a handgun and a nice high-power machine gun to my bucket list...
Hmmmm....I wonder how much they charge in China to kill some prisoners for fun. I'd live to go cell to cell in prison at night, with the gates closed, using a flamethrower on everyone.
And uhh..from what I know it's illegal to own any form of firearms (unless properly authorized for professional use) in Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island. Idk about the rest of New York though.

What animal are you planning to hunt with it anyway? You might of said, idk im rather tired. What part of NY are you in, I know a few there with assault type rifles. I know they are anal about it...if its NYC then yeah they would be, not sure on local laws. Don't have to really worry about it here...can own anything without a big deal, besides class 3 and other NFA type things, still have to get the tax stamps and all that. Be best to just find your own local laws, its a lot of legal talk, but since your just seeing if you can own one, shouldn't be hard to tell. Though I'm not sure why you would want to hunt a large animal with a handgun...less its something like the singleshot variety with a large caliber.

Just thought it would be a lot more fun to hunt them with handguns. That's all. If I wanted a real kill, I would've settled for the more conventional ways...which are still fun, but not as awesome as using a handgun to kill a dear. Or maybe headshot a bear.....idk.

Most likely not just because the guns allowed to hunt animals with have to be powerful enough to make the animal not suffer. Which is why you can't hunt deer with a .22lr. You would need something like a .45 or stronger, and then you would need to know how to shoot it at a distance. Which would be very tough since your handgun will have a short barrel and your accuracy would most likely suck past 50 yds. Also you can't own a fully automatic weapon as a civilian only semi. I suggest you don't even waste your time trying to hunt cause you sound like someone who would just aim anywhere on the deer and shoot. I won't even touch on the bear headshot.

From glancing through NY law, you can own a rifle/shotgun without any permits. Both are perfectly legal for hunting game, provider you do it during the specified season. You must have a license to own a handgun. You can hunt with one.
EDIT: Pretty sure they also have to be centerfire rifles/handguns.
I only use rifles and archery to hunt whitetail deer. 95% of the time I use my bow. I'm going hunting this weekend.. have been hunting Friday-Sunday every week since October 3rd.
EDIT 2 : In b4 anti's, oh wait..

Ooh, yeah you may be right.. I tried finding more info on it. Doesn't look good. Something about needing permit for rifles and shotguns also, but only for keeping them in your home. They can't be taken outside the home??

He needs a permit to own any kind of weapon it seems... in other words, he has to pay a large fee, jump through burning hoops and then pay more fees. all so he can keep a handgun locked in a safe in the basement of his home.
