I've been thinking. It is my OPINION that instead of having people do politics, work to become governors , senators, etc. as their goal, we should choose someone who never tried to become our leader.
I think the problem today is partially due to people in the government being in it because it is their goal. They're striving for the power.
I think the best man/woman for the job would not be someone that campaigns for it, but rather someone the community as a whole recognizes and all believe in having the traits necessary to be a good leader. The position of power should be given to someone who never asked for it, but is willing to take it up; not someone who's aim in life is to gain that power.
With today's system, people know how it all works. They campaign to get friends, supports, than just work their way up by sticking to clean messages. We should choose someone in their natural setting because that is how they will truly act when in office.
I'm a bit tipsy right now, but hope you guys get the general gist of what I'm going for. Discuss stuffs.

People who crave for power are generally not fit to wield it. Sadly, what you suggest is never going to happen. Power-mad freaks will always overshadow those who do not strive for power but who would make fine leaders. It won't work in politics, though it might in for example wartime armies; a common man pulled into the army can rise to commander if he is capable leader even if he has no urge to climb up the ranks. And it's those men that make the best leaders. In politics, only those with personal agendas join in... Yes, I don't trust politicians.
In my opinion the best government system would be either a good god or some infallible machine or AI. (Deus Ex anyone?) Too bad gods do not exist and there are no infallible machines or AIs as long as humans are not infallible, and if humans were we'd need no machines or gods or AIs to govern us.
Seeing the options, I think it was originally a bad idea to crawl out of the ocean.

For example, who would you rather have fix and decorate your yard, someone that truly enjoys gardening, works hard every day, or someone who just got out of jail and is now doing community service. Both will act nice, and work hard, but which one will be consistent over time.

what do we do if we give the power to someone that doesn't want to rule?

And your analogy doesn't make sense, it kinda works against what ur trying to say lol

I understand (at least a part of) Goseki's point. Of course there are people who wish to lead and are cabale of doing it, but I find it unlikely that someone's who's hell-bent on gaining power would actually make a good ruler. We'll always be governed by those who want to rule, be they fit to wield to power or not.
Chances are you're better off drinking beer than thinking about it.

Ambition is not bad. If they're ambitious and deserve to lead people will vote for them. People don't vote for Joe Schmo down the block because he's a nice fella with cool ideas. They vote for his cousin who has the drive & determination to make his ideas, good or bad, a reality.

Ambition is not bad, but when going after so much power as politicians have in their hands, too much ambition can be a bad thing. Within that field, to succeed more and more dirty tactics will be played. For a position of so much power, it's just my opinion that choosing someone who desires it so much could very likely end badly since so much of what they do will be just to gain that power.
If someone who didn't strive to reach the top, but had all the qualities to lead and was willing to accept the burden when asked, I think that person would make a better leader than someone who's sole purpose was to reach the top.
Like I said, just my opinion.

You're assuming that everyone who strives for power wants only the power and not the change that can comes from it.

I dont see any evidence that obama wanted to be president for personal gain.

Your whole theory wouldn't work at all except on the communal level. If you tried to put someone in office like this it would never work. You might want someone you think "deserves" it to be given the power but would someone from a different part of the country who has no idea who the person is want them in office? The reality is that if someone wants to be president or lead a country they have to compete for the position it can't be given to them because fairness would be thrown out the window causing all sorts of ruckus.

Maybe not a position as high up as the presidency, but like smaller. Like I said, it was just my opinion, doesn't mean it'll work or apply well to real life. I'm sure when the time calls for it, people will be able to ban together and work in harmony, but until chaos erupts and in everyday life, I'll stay pessimistic about people.
