But that's a long time to come up with a new date for the doomsday. People get bored easily and i don't think setting that date so far was a good idea, cos i don't think u need such a long time to come up with a new date for it.

I am sure by that year we might have the ability to go to other planets (Mars most likely) and we would likely have a better estimate on whether that rock from space could have even a slightest effect on our little blue planet. Heck, even if that does happen I am sure we have some sort of gravity bomb or some crap of a technology we call brilliant to drive its course away from us.
