Doesn't matter where you're from, although I don't really know how voluntary signing up for the military is done outside of the U.S.
I have a really good friend out in Okinawa, Japan right now just giving orders behind a desk...but not for long. He got a call for deployment. He's gonna have to fight.
I know a security guard for the corporation I work for who is still on active duty...he served however much time in Afganistan and then in Okinawa, and now he's chillin in my area, waiting for his next set of orders.
My little bro(17) is for sure entering the Marines. He's already signed his life away to them. God damnit it sucks. His recruiter is a genuine dumbass too.
Anyways, who else knows someone out there bustin and risking their ass? Or, however little I like to say it, who knows someone who'se died or come back maimed?
EDIT: This is a warning: If we start talking about how soldiers die and how you don't care, I'll flame the living shit out of you. I honestly don't care if I get banned. It's just not something you need to be doing.
Please, no negative comments.

Meh NYPD is kinda off-topic from the armed-forces. They do risk their lives though. Good for them, as long as they aren't ass hats.
I know OF tons of people who went to the service...I was just naming the people who I actually care about.

My dad had a gunshot wound that also almost killed him in Vietnam.
Don't know of anyone personally that is in the military right now.

Every male in my part of the family (my father, grandfather, etc) served in the military at some point. I plan on continuing that tradition.
My father was actually a combat engineer and border guard in Germany while the wall was still up. He's seen people get shot by the Russians for trying to make it across.

My dad's side of the family used to be part of the chinese aristocracy - when the republic came they handed them all government positions and alot of them became officers in the military, and stayed after the coming of communism.
On my mothers side, as everyone, we have WWI and WWII vets.
My cousin's dad, my mom's sister's ex-husband was a north vietnamese defect. He got to major... left Vietnam with all of his men by hijacking 3 boats and sailing across the pacific and he has 5-6 bullet scars in his chest from being mown down with a machine gun, as well as others. I call him rambo, just because he's still in war mode - he even still sleeps with his eyes open.
Although I don't see myself joining the military (I would if I were american) i'm a huge history buff. My parents and family told me that when I was growing up I never watched barney or sesame street, just military documentaries on the history channel. By 4 years old I had memorized a airplanes encyclopedia, my library has about 200-250~ war books and my room is full of memorabilia.
I just turned my head and I just realized Apocalypse Now is playing. I can still name the model and manufacturer of every plane, gun, boat, jeep, etc in the movie.

thought about signing up myself, where i live now is in the middle of two army bases, and RAF base and an american airbase. i hear jets, bombers, carriers and cargo planes go up and down all the time, can sometimes here the cannons when they're training with tanks and mortars. the morei think about it the less i think I would do it. I'll stay at home and protect the peopel I care abotu as best I can with my own two hands.
I can't recall many family i've known being in the army, my grandad on my mums side was evacuated as a child in WWII, I don;t know my tree further back then that, i think my grandad on my dad's side was a soldier, my dad has some medals somewhere, but i never met him, passed away when my dad was 14.
i think my family is quite a young one

For all those people who consider joining, my advice is to join as an officer. Just get a degree which the military view as valuable and your starting pay is 2x of the starting recruit.

Yep, buddy of mine went into the Marine Corps. I'm pretty sure he won't make it out alive.. during one of their do-everything-your-uptight-anal-drill-instructor-says sessions he smacked himself in the head with his gun and got a concussion.

My grandfather father died in WW two, well he was never found. He never got to see his son.
Does that count as On-topic?

Numerous friends/fraternity brothers were involved in the 1st gulf war.
My Nephew is currently active duty army. He returned from his first tour in Iraq several months ago. He's going back in April. I've got a few other friends that are/have been there in the past 2 years.

Sorry to let you know, but if he hasn't fought yet, he will eventually. That's a rule.
Well if we're talking about grandparents or parents...
My grampa was a fighter pilot during WWII. He survived, died as an old man at roughly 90 years young.
My dad was stationed in Germany as a reserve unit during hmmm what war was it...I dunno but he ALMOST had to go and fight, but luckily he didn't.
Yes Black my brother is 17 and is already amped to join up. I don't think along those same lines though. I've seriously considered it; I don't believe it's for me. I can do something more worthwhile with my life than kill other people being ordered to kill me.

All Singaporeans after graduating from college or poly(a school) have to go for National Service (NS), either can choose between army, police ,navy or airforce.
Mainly people are selected for army.. =/
Im going in sometime this coming June and last for 2 years.

Shitty. I am sorry to hear that. I feel that if I were drafted I wouldn't go. I'd move to another nation...although that may be hard, considering the U.S. now has pacts with Canada and Mexico to capture the draft dodgers.
I'll be in college if there is a draft, at least I hope. If not, then like I said....

Yes. That's how they capture you at the Canadian/Mexican borders.
