Okay, so here's the deal: last week I posted a topic about voting for my boy in the Doak Walker award poll on ESPN.com I thank all of you who did. He ended up winning the poll. However, and this is typical of college football, the three guys who are the finalists for the award are the "big" names from the "big" schools. No matter that they have all had less-than-stellar seasons, it's all about preseason hype. Smith and Forte (of Tulane University) have had seasons that dwarf the seasons of Mike Hard, Ray Rice and D. McFadden. Hell, Hart even missed 3 games!!! McFadden has faced Defenses that, overall, when compared to UCF's Smith aren't as good (that's taking in the entire season into account). Bottom line, my bow K. Smith is the quiet star, but he's coming back next year and will definitely make more noise. Here is a few highlights of UCF's game this past weekend against SMU :)

UCF will be a contender in the years to come. The big three in florida better look out! :)

Does central florida play anyone worth a crap this season? This is a question not a flame.

Dude, I agree with you totally. Check this out...

I was being a stat whore, and I was looking on SI.com for stats on some of the dual threat QB's around the nation. I found some of this kind of interesting in terms of how the media portrays Heisman frontrunners. I've only looked at dual threat quarterbacks, but obviously this can be applied to any position.

Tim Tebow - Florida
Games: 11
Passing: 198/289 ATT - 68.5% - 2870 YDS - 26 TD - 6 INT
Rushing: 181 ATT - 749 YDS - 20 TD - 4.1 YPC - 11 Sacks

Dennis Dixon - Oregon
Games: 9.5
Passing: 172/254 ATT - 67.7% - 2136 YDS - 20 TD - 4 INT
Rushing: 105 ATT - 583 YDS - 9 TD - 5.6 YPC - 13 Sacks

Zac Robinson - Oklahoma State
Games: 9.5
Passing: 169/279 ATT - 60.6% - 2417 YDS - 19 TD - 8 INT
Rushing: 111 ATT - 705 YDS - 7 TD - 6.4 YPC - 4 Sacks

Stephen McGee - Texas A&M
Games: 11
Passing: 167/297 ATT - 56.2% - 1785 YDS - 9 TD - 5 INT
Rushing: 158 ATT - 828 YDS - 4 TD - 5.2 YPC - 12 Sacks

The stat that stands out to me, is Robinsons yards per carry and the sacks. And all 4 QB's are in spread offensive systems where there are designed QB runs. Kinda funny that Dixon was considered on top of the Heisman race. I guess because his team was 8-1? I'm not saying Robinson should be considered for Heisman rofl. I just think it's funny Dixon was getting all that hype.

Dixon is a great player, but not Heisman material. Not if there are other QB's playing better than he is. My friend says "Well Dixon was leading his team to victory." Zac Robinson can't go out and play defense too. When your team racks up 600 yards of offense and you lose, its not any fault of the QB. But I understand leading your team has a lot to do with it (i.e. Vince Young and the Rose Bowl National Championship). Where do you draw the line?

The award is for the Most Outstanding Player in College Football, not the Player Who Leads His Team to a Better Record. Barry Sanders won the Heisman in 1988, despite his Oklahoma State team losing 3 games. But it seems like in this decade, only players on a top 5 team are considered, regardless if there are better players at the same position on a lesser winning team.

So... Should an outstanding football player be overlooked because he's not on a top 25 team?

Explain.

So let's say this...

Player #1 has 3,000 rushing yards. Averaging over 250 yards a game. he has 30 touchdowns. Averaging over 9.5 yards a carry. Yet his team record is 7-5 and unranked.

Player #2 has 1,500 rushing yards (half that of player #1), averaging just over 100 yards per game. He has 16 touchdowns. Averaging 6.8 yards a carry. His team record is 11-1 and is in a BCS Bowl (not the national championship).

You're telling me, that Player #2 should win the Heisman simply because he's on a better team? Even though player #1 has the better statistics and plays on a worse team (which means he's more talented to amass those totals).

Yes because the heisman is also about how you lead your team. if your team is not in like the top ten you will probably not have a chance to win it.

Where did you hear that? The Heisman Trophy Award goes to The Most Outstanding Player in College Football. It doesn't go to the player who "Has the Best Team Record".
