It is said that in the future internet providing companies are going to actaully "limit" what sites you can go to. By "limiting" them i mean, that they are only gonna give u "basic" websites. So for example if u pay for there, lets just say $60 plan, you'll get to go to any sites they let u go to, and if u want to be able to access any website u want ull have to pay more.

For example like having basic channels on TV, and then paying more if u want to get access to the others like NFL, TBS, etc... This would really suck... considering that because there aren't even that many internet providers, they can do this. It would basically be a monopoly, and because you will want internet you will be forced to fair with there rules. I mean who are they to tell limit us to websites. This is the worldwide web, it has millions of websites, and growing at a very fast rate. I don't think this is something you can simply do it to.

Also I heard that if Obauma is elected he's gonna pass some law that they cant do this cuz its a monopoly and all. I hope he wins!

Also im not completely clear about this thing.. so if anyone can, plz explain it better, lol cuz im not sure if i am explaining it correctly, plz go ahead.

Discuss...
:D

This is old. It won't work either because nobody "owns" the internet.

they don't "own" the internet, they "own" the service to access the internet.

If it happens, you do know that if everyone just refused to buy internet because of it, we would get our way?
If nobody abides by their rules, they'll have to abide by ours.

You can get internet access without paying...

And yeah you have to pay for access legally, but that doesn't mean they can limit what you do on it. Like you said they don't own the internet, they own the access.

If that happens, lets just say nobody buys there service, for those few days nobody has service, the economy will suffer severely. These days alot of major companies use the internet to make income and stuff. So just imagine how much Billions or even trillions of dollars would be loss.

This is happening right now. Using bandwidth limitation has the same effect.

I used to have free 28kbs dial up internet back when AOL's 56k was the shit. I got it from excite and then netzero - it was powered by ads. Initially by popups and eventually by a perma banner stuck to the bottom of your screen.

Where did you actually hear this from? I think you misinterpreted it, which is why I'm asking for a source. :?

The Internet is far too large to have such specific limitations. Not only that, but you could always visit such places through the use of proxies and so forth. It's not very difficult to bypass site restrictions from an ISP.

ISPs could perhaps limit what content you upload/download, but that's already happening right now. Comcast is known to slow down its user's speed when accessing content from a P2P application or when torrenting.
