Prologue
“There are two fundamental differences between glory and honor. Honor is a personal opinion of yourself. Glory is the opinion of others and history. When you die will you be remembered in glory or infamy, or will you even be remembered at all. Though your honor adds to how glorious you appear to those around you or those that hear of you, there are many things that in the end add to glory. Is it by following some code of behavior, or is by the deeds you preformed, how rich you were, how man you’ve killed, how many you saved, or is it by something that man can’t really understand but be only caught up in. Though one thing can be certain is determined by your deeds, and the significance of those deeds on others” the old man said as he handed a fine piece of parchment rolled up, and a feather pen to the three men before him. “In all things that you do, remember how they will reflect upon you one day”
Eris reached out with hands shaking to grab the contract. He removed the piece of leather that had the paper bound. At the top, as a design that resembled a gem, drawn as double octagons one in side the other and the corners of the inner and outer connected by lines, and a triangle in side the inner octagon that pointed down, and inside that triangle was a cross. To the right of it laid “for glory and profit” in small letters, above in large letters, “We are the Brethren of the Blade”.
Eris’ hands still shook as his eyes slowly followed the page down. The body of the page recited the Brother’s Creed
“We are the Brethren of the Blade, for glory and profit, Each brother to his station with out fail. Your brothers’ lives are more important then your own. A brother is loyal to his brothers. We will have no surviving enemies. A brother is a brother always. We are the Brethren of the Blade, for glory and profit this is our way of life.”
The old man speaks,” By signing your agree fully, to live and die by this creed, if you do not live up to the creed you will not live at all.”
“Comforting”
“This contract is a blood contract, and the pen I gave you is sharp, you figure it out.”
After using the pen to cut his finger, he signed his name, and handed it to Fox, a tall skinny red headed young man, who then in turn signed it and gave it to Alphonse, a larger dark headed and muscular man with a small mustache and small beard, who signed and handed it back to the old man.
After examining the signatures, he said, “ Welcome my new brothers your life awaits you”
“Can’t believe I just signed my life away, hell I wasn’t doing anything with it anyways” said Eris.
Alphonse remained his calm self, and just shrugged in response, while for some reason Fox looked confident and happy.
“As having made it as far becoming a brother, you are already expected to be a competent fighter, or other wise skilled, and though this first mission will be a light one, we will not be holding your hands.”
“huh, that was pretty fast”, said Fox..
“no kidding, having already planed a job for us, well spare no haste”, Eris said quietly with a slightly raised brow.
The old man turned instructed them to remain here for a few moments, and then returned holding a wrapped piece of slightly less fine paper. “These are the instructions for your first job”
Chapter 1: The Rescue of Ezekiel
Primary: Held in prison and sentence to be executed publicly on the first of may, in Paris, a brother by the name of Ezekiel. Approximately 6 and a half feet tall, an English man, brown hair and brown eyes, a scar across his right cheek. You are to locate and bring him to our north French fort.
Secondary: We’d prefer that they believe that Ezekiel was dead so that we don’t’ have worry about, and further interest from the French government towards him. We recommend that you provide a substitute to be executed in his place, how ever anyways you can achieve this illusion is fine.
Reward: 40 pieces of silver
Seconday: 10 pieces of silver
Eris reads the scroll, and says, “Light job my ass, you read it”, hands it to Al.
Al looks over it nods, “Are you kidding? This is insane”, passing it on to Fox.
Fox reads it, and says, “I don’t see what’s such a big deal about it, I mean just go in there and get the guy out”
With a heightened voice, “If he’s being held before public execution he’s probally in the royal palace’s dungeon. Do you have any idea how many guards there will be!”
“oh”
“Yaaa!” nodding his head.
“That is of course if that is where he is being held, with my luck it will, but then again, we could get lucky… “(under his voice) “then again probably not” “ Either way that gives us what, 20 days. If we want to have any time to set up a good plan once we get there, we need to know where he is and the layout, if we want a good plan, or you know wing it once we find him.”
“Just so you know it’ll take you 8 days on horse back to reach Paris from here, I told you it would be light and our informant will be waiting for you every day starting in 10 days from now, at noon at a bakery 2 blocks south of the palace. That gives you 2 days to learn the lay out of the city, and also you may look thru this library for any information you will need before leaving, but nothing leaves this library. Since you have 10 days before he’ll start waiting for you, and it takes 8 days to get there, I recommend you leave tomorrow to give yourself some rest after you get there before you have to get to work.”
