Greetings.

Post your favorite musical genre and also, post why you like it, and why that music is representative for yourself. Getting to know each other's music is, from what I've experienced, a great way of knowing people.
I'll start:
Although I listen to various types of music (ranging from classical, trance / progressive / techno, to even some black metal (not all of it) ), the one genre that stands out for me is
Melodic Death Metal.
I took eight years of piano classes, and have started to compose music myself. That's where my taste for classical music comes from.
Melodic Death Metal blends both a slightly violent part (the specific death metal core) with a beautiful melody. Often, the melody is somewhat concealed behind the rather violent vocals, but for a trained ear, it's easy to spot and enjoy. Sometimes, the two aspects alternate, but sometimes, when they overlap, the result is great.
My favorite bands are:
Children of Bodom - All-round best. They have, IMO, the best compositional balance)
Mercenary - Transitions from rough to melodic parts are often too abrupt, but I still like them.
Arch Enemy - Harsher than the other bands. Very good lyrics.
In Flames - The "classical" melodeath band. In Flames influenced pretty much everybody who followed them.
Here are some song examples:
Children Of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll:
- this is one of the most energetic songs I've ever heard. Pumps me up really well.
Children Of Bodom - Touch Like Angel Of Death (Tokio Warhearts version):
- notice the fabulous intro. The transition towards the song itself is smooth and natural.
In Flames - Crawl Through Knives:
- the vocals switch from being rough to smooth and, almost soothing. This fluctuation makes up the whole song for me.
Mercenary - Lost Reality:
- this band isn't famous but this song is a masterpiece. The chorus is fabulous. Many of their songs are quite long (six to eight minutes), but they're definitely worth it for me.
Arch Enemy - We will rise:
- the melodic character of this song only comes to light near the end, but overall, it's one of their best.
There's other bands I like too, that don't belong to this genre, and I'd like to list them:
Disturbed
Emperor
Thorns
Nevermore
Now, post yours.
