In results unveiled Friday at DCIA's P2P Market Conference in New York City, P4P technology was shown to enhance download rates by 205 percent over unmanaged P2P downloads.

NEW YORK CITY (BetaNews) - After achieving much faster than usual download and data delivery rates in a field trial with Verizon and Pando, the P4P Working Group is now looking at doing trials with other ISPs and P2P network providers, said Haiyong Xie, a Working Group member who is also a Ph.D. student at Yale.

The trial made use of Xie's implementation of P4P networking principals, Pando's application plattform, and network topology data from Verizon.

Essentially, P4P is designed to speed up P2P downloads by localizing network traffic and reducing the numbers of routers and transfers needed for distributing data. Among the other statistics released here Friday, the Working Group said it could decrease the average number of hops needed in ISP internal data delivery from 5.5 to 0.89.

"Before doing this field trial, we'd conducted simulations. But results of the trial prove that P4P also works in the real world," said Laird Popkings of Pando Networks, co-chair of the P4P Working Group, speaking with BetaNews at the event in Manhattan.

A similar field trial is still under way with Pando -- a company which partners with NBC Direct, for example, on P2P content delivery -- and Spanish-based ISP Telefonica. Results from the Telefonica trial are expected over the next week or two.

Is this good or bad? What do you guys think?

Everybody knows its pr0n to pr0n.

Anyway. I guess that's good news to some people. I hardly download media contents since I'm already satisfied with streaming. I only resort to P2P when I really need a software badly. >.<"

right... its going to double my upload speed and my download speed so its actually faster than what my isp is providing me? i very very very highly doubt that since its kinda gone past that mark that has "impossible" written on it. Unless they give out free faster internet connections, then it would be able to go faster.

The only time i do get slow downloads is when there arnt that many people uploading to me. Again, this is going to make their upload speed go faster that it can possibly go? most of them are usually uploading other stuff to other people aswell so their upload speed is at its limits.

This obviously isn't about torrents... if it were than it would be nonsence, only way to speed up torrents is to get a higher net speed or a seeder with a higher upload speed..

It's probably shorter response time isp<->user

Look at it this way then. It will use half the bandwidth, and perhaps you'll actually be able to surf at the same time.

It happened to me when i used like some sort of ip changer program, (im using Bearshare) before ip change my dl speed was 120-110kbps~ after ip change, it shot up to 800kbps+

lol p4p wont exist wont make crap faster, it all depends on the peers (hosts) net speed, If they haver dialup and u have cable, you're gonna dld 1kbs not 500kb+, so its next to impossible to speed up unless the equal connections through servers and split the data so they wont be slowed down by all the connections
