Goth, emo, punk, glam, tech, mod, rockers, etc. Which lifestyle subculture is bigger in your area? And what do you think about those (and perhaps others that I forgot to add). Here you can see a lot of emo kids but they're usually only in fotolog.com, unless you go to the mall in a weekend I've started to see some kind of mod-emo/glam hybrid movement and it's freaking me out. And you can hardly see goths around here which pisses me off because I belong to the goth subculture and it used and still is really hard to find peers even at specific places. My uncle is a former punk, a life rebel, a true punk. Now he's married, has a steady work and 2 children, his hair is short and he doesn't listen to music anymore (AKA: Died inside). Also, I might not dress like I used to but my tastes in music, my culture and my lifestyle is still the same. I'm a bit of an eclectic person as well. I used to have new romantic friends believe it or not, they're now into post-punk though, kind of lame imo. I really loved the movie SLC Punk, it shows pretty much what was going on back then and it's almost all true. Anyway, who here dislikes emus?

Whenever I see an emo, I pretty much want to kill them.
Its sick. You should see some of the emo kids at my school-why do people even give themselves up to subcultures like the ones casey listed. People may understand them, but no one will like their gay-ass attires and facial piercings/other abnormal things they do to their clothes. What is it, do they think they're cool/I'm-gonna-wear-eyeliner-because-I-want-to-be-special-and-unique? Not to mention that they all also have these elitist attitudes.

It's because they're posers. They do whatever they see in the media, they don't know shit about music, just about all that mainstream crap they listen to. Every single goth I've got to met in a not so shallow point of view was very well educated, had majoy knowledge in either poetry, history, fashion, music and different varieties of crafts. I used to feel so comfortable talking to them at first because I felt as part of it, every single kid would listen to cumbia (pretty much like rap but it's sung by 'villeros' - people from really poor hoods - and all they sing about is how they'd like to either kill cops, f*ck some slutty literally dirty girl, or steal your shoes and hat) and I felt left out because I found that kind of music really shallow and retarded. And yes, I can't go to the mall anymore, but I have to go if I want to go to the movies so I always run into tons of emus, last few times I've been wanting to really beat the crap out of at least one of them

Emo ppl have always existed, only recently have ppl actually decided to buy there whiny sonnets aka Emo Music. If your going to be mad at ppl for following the media and trends then you'll have to kill half the ppl on this forum because i know there are tons of us who bought pokemon cards and played with pogs. I've never met a gothic person outside theater who i didn't find pretentious and annoying especially because if they know so damn much they should go out and actually do something with there life instead of hanging back stage discussing the Arts.... And if goths don't like dark and emotional thing then what exactly if your definition of goth because im pretty sure it'll disagree with everyone elses definition....

Post-punk music brought emo music, which brought emus.
And you probably think of the germanic tribes when you hear the word "goth"...

no i think of ppl who dress in all black wearing pale make up and lots of belts and chains where they don't belong who smoke and have dirty hair and get mad at ppl who don't like things like Rocky Horror Picture Show because if they don't like then they must not understand the artistic value. I think of kids who shout boring Shakespeare and talk about about the sociological, ecological, and psychological problems of the world as if they don't have anything to do with them and just observe and take notice from afar because clearly they are the only ones capable of being sane in this world since they read Nietzsche and agreed with him. but mostly i think of ppl who actually try to think what im thinking...and get it wrong

I hardly agree with Nietzsche's ideals Not all goths wear make-up and belts everywhere. There are different kinds of goths and they dress and think differently. Meet a true romantic goth and you'll be surprised what you could learn. They don't quote Shakespeare and pretend to be above all mankind with their definition of life and the way they live it, just humble, simple people. We're also open minded, that means we won't get mad at you because you have different tastes in music and other arts. That's why you'll see gay, fat, old, weird, freaky, etc. goths, because discrimination among peers is a nono, unlike in other scenes

I'm not fond of putting things (music or people or whatever) in boxes with a label on them.
Anyway I listen to punk and hardcore, but I look like a normal person. What label do I get then?

Not only have you still not defined what exactly being goth is to you but your excluding members of your society who don't define themselves by your definition of goth. Not all gothic ppl are open-minded, to you this makes them less goth to themselves it may make them more goth. I've never met a social group that didn't discriminate against its peers, even hippies draw lines. You didn't invent the gothic ppl so you draw a membership line and define what it takes to be in or out especially in a sub-culture that lacks any real physical limitations. Gay guys are gay. A black guy is clearly black. Goths define themselves and are subjected to the definition of fellow goths so you can't really define what all goths should be like.

You asked for my personal opinion, and there it is. That group I mentioned aboive is what every goth should be like, it was founded based on so many ideals newcomers don't even know nowadays that it makes me sick. It's also funny how nowadays any retarded kid can dress in black and say "look momma I'm goth!" and go tell everyone "look I'm goth, I'm goth!!" and they actually think they are and when they see another 'dark' they're like "omg you poser!!!". Also it's hilarious how in movies they always make the goths seem satanic and farked up. There was a movie about killer ants or something and 2 of the main characters were "goth" and they were shady and depressed throughtout the whole movie and in the end with the happy ending they were "wearing normal clothes" according to the movie.
I'm telling you, the media in conjunction with braindead mainstream zombie kids has f*cked us all pretty much.

Bunch of preps in my school...Few if any emo's but we just make fun of them. We imitate they;re whining music and ask them when;s the next FOB concert. Some people make the cutting wrist thing with their hands but now we get in trouble for that (bullying).
In clubs there's a bunch of Guidos which really annoys me. Them and their guido 2-step....

There is ALOT of hate in this... I dont even think those are subcultures though. They dont walk about in armies. They're a lifestyle but not a subculture.

anyone who doesn't play the game even a little is doomed to stay at the bottom. Im not saying kiss ass and convert to someones approval but you can't get far without appealing to others.
I think its worth being a tool for a year so you can get the job you really want, the one you deserve, and be set for life. The guy whose yelling how he's not gonna listen to "the man" to clean out your trashcan....

Changing as in changing what you wear, your behavior, your interests, etc. to fit in. That makes you a tool. Everyone "plays the game" to get on people's good sides.

I wouldn't get far in the business world wearing my hair in front of my eyes, avoiding any if not all social contact, and wearing jeans and hoody. If i want to succeed im going to have to wear a suit, put on a smile, and push my hair into a respectable form.
I call that playing the game. I think a tool is someone who makes those changes and lives by it allowing the changes they've made to themselves to appease others become who they really are.

I haven't had a time to think if i belong to a "subculture" or not. My circle of friends is varied. They listend to different music than i do, they read different books than i do (some of them don't even read ), etc. Of course we share some ideas and that's how we get along, but there's no way to label us as a group (in the usual ways like dress, music, etc). Anyway, according to your definition (at some extent) i would fall in the "goth" subculture, though i don't really care. I am what i am and i will be with whoever accepts me. I do however dislike some of the groups that actually can be labeled, which is the case of most (if not all) mainstream media-born. I dislike those who join the bunch without even know why or without even caring or supporting the group's ideals. When people think by themselves, usually they gain my respect and, if we are lucky, we become friends.

I'm not into this trend shit, I'm friends with people who are cool and know how to enjoy their time. Which does NOT include any white gangster bitches, emo kids, freakishly odd kids that wear like cartoon clothes ( This girl was wearing a suit from that Naruto show, wtf?) We got a black gothic kid which is always weird, if emo kids were really emo, there wouldn't be emo kids cause they'd just be suicidal at age of 5. Most of my friends are black or pot smokers, i'm not black and i don't smoke, but they're the funniest/chill people you'll ever find
