Its a simple question, that I thought of while listening to some of my favorite artists play live. They sucked.
The only band that I can say plays better live than in the studio is Dream Theater. Take into account that I haven't searched the whole music spectrum looking for tracks/videos of bands playing live. So here it is, from Dream Theater's score DvD:

in flames deffinetly sound better live (well, sometimes, all bands have their bad days). they always screw with the vocals in the studio versions and it just sounds so much better live. Not sure if its still the case with the new album, havnt really listened to it much. Thats about the only band i can think of off the top of my head, theres alot of bands that sound good live but not better than the studio version, still pretty good though since live requires alot more energy than standing around in studio.
lowlands is a dutch festival. been there twice now. seen acts like QOTSA, Muse, Massive Attack Prodigy, DfA1979, dead 60's, dj shadow, soulwax, arctic monkeys, foo fighters, etc etc. is 3 day festival, and it's fun :]
Without a doubt Hammerfall. Although i have only heard their live recorded cd's, they are much better than their studio recorded cd's. Hopefully one day i will be able to see the real thing.

Rammstein and Children of Bodom.
Children of Bodom has something particular about their live shows. The music is slightly derailed, and it appears some of the intstruments are out of tune, but, nevertheless, I absolutelly LOVE the way it sounds. SO much better than the studio verions.
