in fps games at 100+ ping it gets extremely annoying to play. (I don't see a difference between 10 and 50 ping but above that you notice it more and more) In mmo's I don't really know, when I played WoW I had 60 ping so can't really say what it's like to have 100+ ping, though I don't think it matters too much in mmo's cause there's always a global cooldown or something else, don't need to do shit real fast.
I'd say it all depends on the game and how fast you have to react. The faster the game is paced, the better your ping has to be to compete.
edit: yes, 23 ping is low. everything above 100 is high for me.

it doesn't matter how good your pc is, ping relates to your internet. You can get 1 ping on a windows 98 pc and on a super high end pc, it doesn't matter.
@Grimm, what do you mean with high ping? I never knew that there is no such thing as 'fast' internet, only broader internet and I always enjoy these kind of trivia. So, something I'm missing?

Ping refers to your connection with the game server. If you live in the US and the server you're playing on is hosted in the US you'll have a low ping (and thus no lag). If the server is hosted in Europe you will have a relatively high ping (and lag in some degree)

If you connect to a server where the ping is over 200, just get out, its a pain in the ass to play. Cause what happens is that your frame rate gets slow and basically your slower than everyone else relative to time. That means that your bullets are slower than everyone else and you will die, even if you unloaded 10 bullets into the guys head.

Quote: Computer Desktop Encyclopedia: latency
(1) The time between initiating a request in the computer and receiving the answer. Data latency may refer to the time between a query and the results arriving at the screen or the time between initiating a transaction that modifies one or more databases and its completion.
Disk latency is the time it takes for the selected sector to be positioned under the read/write head. Channel latency is the time it takes for a computer channel to become unoccupied in order to transfer data. Network latency is the delay introduced when a packet is momentarily stored, analyzed and then forwarded. To understand "ping" think about submarines and sonar. A sound is sent out and the time it takes for the echo to return allows distance calculation. It's a little different with computers, but in a Client / Server network your comp is communicating with the SRO servers by passing packets through the internet. Measuring the ping rate allows you to determine relative network traffic (and relative delay) between you and SRO. It works by sending ICMP 'echo request' packets to the target host and listening for ICMP 'echo response' replies. Ping estimates the round-trip time, generally in milliseconds, records any packet loss, and prints a summary when finished. To do an actual "ping" you can START /// RUN /// CMD /// < to open up a command interface then, at the command prompt type PING [IP ADDRESS] -or- [DHCP HOSTNAME] [ENTER]

Shynygamie wrote: daemon225 wrote: like lets say some one has like 23 ping is at low? yes it is low Agreed, 23 milliseconds is "low", but the real question is "What are you pinging?" For instance if I were to ping myself, my result would be lower. If I were to ping my gateway server it would also be expected to be lower than 23. The real question is, "What is the pingrate to the SRO Server?" To know this you'd need the server IP Address. But even that might not help, as most game servers do not respond to ICMP data requests. What you were likely doing was finding a server on the net that 'tests' your ping to THEM. To be able to interpret this statistic you'd have to perform it often and at various times. So then if your average ping to a test server (located in Montreal, for instance) was 41ms, then yes, 23ms would be better. Simply testing your ping to a unknown server once doesn't tell me much, but sure 23 is 'good'. QUESTION (please): IS there an ingame command to show the current ping (not FPS, ping)?

How do you determine your ingame ping? Is there a command that tells you? I know that "WOW" has a command like that, but don't know how to do it in SRO. (thx)

Mine is here: Notice a couple things though. My throughput is currently clocking at ~16.7 mb/s My current ping (to the Van Server) is 117ms. This doesn't tell me my throughput (more important) or my ping to the SRO servers. For instance, I've tested my throughput before at > 20 mb/s It's a measurement of the relative traffic and data transfer rate between your connection and the server your are testing from. In order to make sense of it (because you're asking, how fast is my internet speed " now" vs. before) you have to do it multiple times. So if your normal throughput is 15 meg and your normal ping is 31, because you've tested it lots of times... and you notice that you're lagging in SRO, you 'could' run the test right then. That would help you understand if the 'lag' or 'latency' you were experiencing in game was likely due to general network traffic. But here's my guess: The SRO servers are slowing down (probably). CPU Utilization on the server is normally more significant (given that you have a good connection and a newer comp) than ping. Sorry this so wordy, just trying to say that "Ping" is only part of the equation. [EDIT] under spoiler: -- sheesh, there I go again... typing too much
