Stage 1: Morality is whatever you can get away with.
Stage 2: Morality is whatever you get rewarded for.
Stage 3: Morality is whatever nets you approval from others.
Stage 4: Morality is whatever maintains the social order.
Stage 5: Morality is whatever is in the best interest of your society.
Stage 6: Morality is whatever is in the best interest of mankind.
You start out at stage 1 as an infant then work your way up. Most adults only make it to stage 4, but visionaries like Gandhi are often said to be at stages 5 and 6.
