Are you using mac or something?

Anyway, in the host file it should say something like "# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names."
Atleast it says that in Windows 7, Xp and Vista, if its mac then I have no idea swithc one

i have win xp, my hosts1.bak

says..........

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:

my host.ics

has,...............

## Copyright (c) 1993-2001 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This file has been automatically generated for use by Microsoft Internet
# Connection Sharing. It contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names
# for the home network. Please do not make changes to the HOSTS.ICS file.
# Any changes may result in a loss of connectivity between machines on the
# local network.

I think your hosts file is hidden/write protected. To open it, Click Start > Run... > Type:
Code:
attrib -r -h -s C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\drivers\\etc\\hosts

and press enter.

Then look for the hosts file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts folder
It has no extension just the name "hosts". Now you should be able to edit it.

Like AnarChaos said, the host file has no extension, name "hosts" ; hosts.bak is the backup of the host file, and hosts.ics is something else.
Sometimes the "hosts" file is missing or deleted, all your need is to create a new file using notepad

It's not hosts.ics, it's hosts

The Hosts.ics file is used by ICS to store information about dynamically configured clients. Avoid making changes to this file to prevent the loss of connectivity or data. The Hosts file (with no file name extension) is the file to which you add information about statically configured clients.

you don't have the hosts file (no extension) because it is deleted for some reasons. What you need to do is creating a new file there

A simple way to test if it works is to add a line :
127.0.0.1 www.silkroadforums.com

If it works, you blocked your access to SRF, otherwise you can still connect.

Host file can be used to block the connectivity to a server by redirecting the traffic to your own machine or to trigger the connectivity to a chosen remote server.
