I really don't see how this is useless, but that's a matter of opinion.
If one knows the range of the damages that are possible from one arrow in a combo, and the probability of a critical occurring, one could accurately compute the expected outcome of a combo. (Average total damage) I think that's a good number to know, be it against a mob or a person. On my noob char, when I PVP, I can see the minimum and maximum damages my arrows do in one combo (X), multiply that by four, and add ((Expected # of criticals per combo) * (X)), and then one has the average damage done by my arrow combo. That's quite an important approximation, and is easy to calculate. I compute that for every PVP I'm in when there aren't other distractions such as tons of people. I'll rephrase that if you truly need it.
But if you consider combos in general useless, I see your point. I love to use them, you may not.
