On the contrary you can crit with Cleric or Warlock rod, equip a shield and use the warriors Shield Thrash or Shield Crush, and boom you can crit and knockback the mob at 80% chance.
but u arent using the rod as a weapon when using this skill

Yes but its still a physical attack, meaning that there is a chance of a crit, and yes it is a warrior skill at lvl 10. You can use it with just the shield on its own, therefore anyother 1 handed weapon is fine.
