It works for me trying alchemy right after grinding.

It has worked for me always, actually if you see all the treads were i've made +7's, they has been made right after grinding.

still i remain flustered with never getting past plus 5, only got plus 5 once
maybe just every weapon i find are unlucky cause thats one plus 5 in a year and half of playing the rest fail to even go plus 4
