Just letting all of you with high-end computers know that the Bloom Effect detracts from the settings.
I have a 7900GTO 512mb video card, 2GB OCZ pc3500 ram, and an Athlon 64 3800+, and I run the game on max settings (minus detailed shadows), with 8x AA and 8x AF, and with Bloom effect I get horrible jagged lines, but without it, the game looks beautiful.

I have always turned off Bloom Effect but not from lag but because it makes everything super bright looking to me, I just never liked it.

It doesn't cause lag, but it ruins anti aliasing, and filtering.

Then Bloom shouldn't affect you too much. It's all a matter of personal taste.
Because AA/AF are on-the-fly, I can't post a screenshot of how much better it looks with high-end seetings, since it captures it the same as if I was running bloom, however, I will attest to how significant a change it will cause.

What's the point of it anyway? It makes everything look like you're looking through a pair of dark and blurry sun glasses.

no no no, the bloom effect adds the extra shinnyness to everything. it's suppose to simulate HDR lighting, but not as hardware demanding. it makes everything look softer by blurring out the edges sometimes with extra lighting/shine.
anyway i love the bloom effect. have it on all the time. and yes my machine can handle everything on high without any lag from the hardware (lag from internet connection is inevitable) except for shadows.

the bloom effect is the dream-like view?
edges of things are smoothened-out and semi-glowing?
how do i turn off this effect while running on medium or high details?
there was an "official" name for this effect and it was first mentioned in Prince of Persia Sands of Time and later emphasized by Star Wars Battlegrounds but i forgot but im sure it wasn't bloom effect, anyway i got a crappy junk box running SRO for me so i didn't keep track of the name anyhow

Bloom = HDR
nVidia cards can't run AA and HDR at the same time, that's why you were getting choppy graphics.
Works fine with ATI though and I can assure you that the image quality is also better.
Tried with a 7950GT, a 6800GT and my X1950XT .
Bloom is basically lighting effects, easy way to notice it's effect is in DW. With bloom OFF the ground looks pale, light. With bloom ON the ground is now golden, a bit shiny and most colors stands out nicely.

I am pretty sure that this is correct. I have an x800XT AIW card and it looks 10 times better with bloom lighting enabled.

I am no fan of ATI, they lack in FPS, even though the image quality is nicer, I like smooth gaming.
nVidia has digital Vibrance video overlay, which I use with SRO, so Bloom looks lame for me.
Thanks for pointing out that it does use HDR.

bloom effect is the photoshop equivalent of a screen (i think) layer with about +20% contrast, -20% brighness, with a Gaussian blur.
