They can be used to fight anything?

In which case, summon mercs on unique hunts? O_o

or only usable in job/guild wars?

Mercs can only be used in job/guild wars they wont attack mobs

They attack mobs, but its some bug/glitch
I seen a video on youtube once, where mercs attacked Niya Mages

Lol ok in "Standard" use of mercs they only do job/guild if you exploit a glitch you can try to get it to do what Cresta found out

sometimes they attact stuff that hits them with splash damage. They attact lightning bow npc's all the time.

You can get them to attack mobs if you know how.

I got killed by my Union's Leader Mercs once because we were doing a trade and I got bored so I iced one of my guildmate and Wahmao I got owned by the merc.

Sometime they aren't your friends...
