Post subject: Why, where, how, what are graphics cards? Posted: Thu Jul 20, 2006 3:47 am |

I realized that my pronlem with SRO was that I didn't have a graphics card. DO computers usually come with graphics cards or do we have to buy them and install them our selves? I was looking at some and they looked like huge CPU chips, I have no idea how ou would put that into your computer tower.
WHat kind of graphics cards are good and cheap?
How do you install them?
I know, I'm not a technological genius.

Every Computer has to have a graphics card if you want to see anything on the screen. But older computers have old graphicscards that arent good enough for Silkroad.
And many newer Computers have no Graphic Card but a Graphic Chip onBoard.
If you want to upgrade your graphics card (if there is a card and not a chip) i would buy a GeForce 4 with 64 MB or so which is cheap and good. So why to buy the newest graphics card and put it in a old pc
 try to look on eBay

Almost every modern computer comes with an integrated graphics card. In my experience, these are usually pretty low-end.
If you can't afford £120+ ($220+ ish) for an awesome card, I'd recommend a 256Mb NVidia GeForce 6600, as it is high performance card with a low price compared to other high-ends (I got mine for £58 ($105-ish)
That's the card I use, I haven't overclocked it yet and it can run SRO on medium graphics settings with increased view distance fine with no problems, and it can run it on high pretty well unless there is alot of characters or effects on the screen.
Although it depends on your motherboard. Mine supports PCI-E cards.
I suggest you get a professional to fit it for you and sort your PC out if you really don't have an idea of how to yourself.

lol Retrinox, why put in a new awesome graphic card in a old computer? the system cant handle the power
You can find out what graphic card / chip you have if you look in the manual from your Computer or you can get the info by a program, or you can look into your PC
Maybe this program is good
http://www.dr-hardware.com/
Or do it so (edit):
Rightclick on a free spot on Desktop -> Settings -> Options
( dont know what is called in english got German Windows

How do you know he has an old computer? Or that it cant handle the card? He hasn't posted any specs or given any information.
Still, all he'll need is a new PSU and maybe another fan aslong as his motherboard is compatible with the card.
My PC is 7 years old and handles the 256Mb 6600 just fine.

Tim, please go to the Start menu -> Run -> type "dxdiag" without quotes -> hit enter. Copy down what you see on the first screen in the "System Information" box, then go to the "Display" tab and copy down what you see in the "Device" box. When we have that information we will be more able to help you.

@Retrinox: The Graphic Card has more power that your Old PC can handle. So you could built in the nwest Geforce 7800GTX (or maybe not cuz its PCI-E) and your pc wouldnt be faster maybe slower cuz power cant handle

Wtf? You don't know that my PC can't handle it! You have no idea what my system consists of!
256Mb 6600 is a few years old.. I'm sure my 2Ghz 380W 1GB RAM system can handle it.

I had that about 7 years ago. Where have you been? How old are you?
@timlionheart:
The upgrade would be buying a new graphics card. That information doesnt really help much...we mainly need to see what ALL your specs are or the model number to your PC and who the make is. You may need a whole new PC altogether. Get CPU speed, Memory info, HDD info, and bus info

The above is a info about the whole system.
Quote: Card name: Xpert 128 (Microsoft Corporation) Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc. Chip type: Rage128 GL 4X (AGP 4X) DAC type: Internal DAC (350Mhz) Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_534D&SUBSYS_00081002&REV_00 Display Memory: 32.0 MB
This is not a pretty good one. That maybe is the problem.
Other specs are ok to run Silkroad.

Ah, I thought he just gave the Display info. Well yeah thats ok to run SRO, the card isnt even that bad, but you do need a new one. You can spend 100-125 on a card and get a good deal. Go to http://www.pricewatch.com/

You first have to look if you have an AGP Port or if its an PCI Graphic Card.
If you but the graphic card don't buy PCI-Express cuz this is only for newest PC's. So AGP or / Pci.
Quote: Chip type: Rage128 GL 4X (AGP 4X)
Mh i think thahts AGP so u need to buy an AGP Graphic Card which is common. I dont know about Prices where you live.
But i would say...
Cheap & Good: GeForce 4 MX / GeForce 4 Ti (like @ebay)
and if you want to buy a new card (not ebay) buy a GeForce 6600 GT
for middle-range or ATI 9800 Pro which both very good cards"

Upgrading your RAM will also be a great help, not only when playing SRO but when doing other things or playing other games. Getting a graphics card is the first priority, but RAM is inexpensive these days, and you could triple yours for about $50.
If you have a friend in your area who has some experience working with computer hardware, it would be much easier for you to ask his advice, or have him examine your system in person. The important thing is to know what kind of slot your motherboard has for a graphics card, because if you buy the wrong type you won't even be able to install it.

Well we already have some bus info. He has an AGP card running at 4x. Even if he can only handle 4x I know that ATi cards are backwards compat with 8x/4x AGP speeds.
