Well, not only does SRO work just fine with wine 0.9.38 and PCLinuxOS, it appears to work better! My game settings are saved now from the previous game.

I have to work on the fonts though, the game looks like total crap.

That's awsome it works in pclinuxos. I haven't updated my Ubuntu installation yet, so I should still be running the .37 version of wine, so I assume it still works for me. I'll have to give it a shot next time I'm in Linux.

I still need to find out if there's a way to block a specific package from being upgraded past a certain number when the OS is updated for Ubuntu.

I'm not sure how to block a certain app like wine from updating. Look through the list and uncheck wine or any other app for that matter, before updating the rest of the files.

Edit!

I just found this from googling. Havent tried it yet, but here it is:

Create a file /etc/apt/preferences (if there isn't already one there), and add this to it :

Code:
Package: gaim
Pin: version 2.0.0*
Pin-Priority: 999

save and it will no longer ask to update gaim.
___
I guess it will work for Wine also. Just insert the appropriate wine version inplace of gaim._______________

Thanks. I knew there had to be a way aside from just unchecking "wine" from the list of updates in the GUI.

I think the issues may not be with wine version 0.9.38, but with lag. I am able to play the game on the Olympus server without issue, but not on the Greece server.

When I log in on the Greece server, my HP and MP both read 0/0.

We need more testers. Anyone with Ubuntu willing to try using wine version 0.9.38 and logging into a less crowded server?

I used Ubuntu 7.04 for a while, and I played Guild Wars, WoW and SRO all through the repos wine version. So it definantly works, and SRO was the easiest to get working.

Thanks for the links, but some of us already have it working. The issue is that it has stopped with the latest wine version.

As I stated, I do have it working on PCLinuxOS with wine ver 0.9.38, but only when I log into a POPULATED server. I have logged on to Olympus and Rome and have played the game with no problems. In fact, my setting are saved from game to game. I always change the pickup key from the "G" button to the "SpaceBar". This is a good fix for the game.

I cannot log into Greece and play the game. After about 10 seconds my char locks up and all movement stops.

I haven't had a chance to boot into ubuntu to try it with the new version, or to try blocking the new version through that apt configuration file. I'm at work right now and my home system is currently booted into XP. I can remote into it and reboot it but I don't think I have Ubuntu set up to allow remote access so it would be pointless to reboot from here.

Lately I haven't had much of any time to use my home computer after work. I'm usually too busy with other things around the house.

edit: Well it turns out I was right. I rebooted my computer remotely, and now Ubuntu is up, but I can't ssh into it. I'm assuming sshd isn't even running. Oh well, I guess there goes my plans to try out SRO in Ubuntu today.

My SRO only takes up part of the screen as well in Ubuntu. In order to do full screen, you need to set your SRO resolution to the same resolution as your X Server is set to. This is not the case in Windows because SRO knows how to change Windows' resolution to match what you have SRO at. The software doesn't know how to change the resolution of X Server.

Well I made the mistake of letting wine update and like others said, it doesn't work at all. I PMed my wife ingame and she got the PM but I didn't see it on the screen.

So it looks like the SRO client is communicating with the server, just not updating my screen with the results. I wonder if other actions in the game really do work. I might have my wife trace me and see if I'm actually moving or anything.

Skoruppa, You have to change the IN GAME resolution to match you full screen resolution.

SRO starts on my computer in 1024x768, and in the upper left hand corner just like yours. After you are IN GAME, hit ESC, then the VIDEO tab, and change the resolution there. It will become full screen.

Hey Prometheus! I think you might be on to something there. One of the times the game was working for me on Ubuntu and then just "froze". I couldn't see any movements, and I was out in Black robber country. I was tinkering around with buttons and commands for about 10 minutes. When I restarted the game, i was in Donwhang, and had apparently died.

The game is working well in PCLinuxOS, but only when I play on non-crowded servers. The bugs with saving information are fixed in 0.9.38.

Just a thought. I wonder if something happened to the network stack in the new wine version. I'm thinking maybe data is able to go down the stack to the network link, but something happens to it as it travels back up the stack to the application.

That would explain why I was able to log in, PM my wife, run around hotan, and everything, but my client wasn't showing me do it. It's like I was talking to the server, but the server couldn't talk to me.

I'm not in Ubuntu at the moment, but perhaps someone could try installing some other Windows Internet software (AOL Instant Messenger or something) and see if that works fine.

Ok, like i talking before, silkroad working on ubuntu on wine 0.9.38 but only if you compile it (not download from winehq repo).
To get better performance I write this little bash script to run game
Code:
#!/bin/sh
cd ~/'c/Program Files/Silkroad'
WINEDEBUG="-all" nice -n 19 wine silkroad.exe

i save this to silkroad, move to /usr/local/bin and do chmod +x. Now game start when i write in console silkroad command :>
With beryl game works to:

I was going to reinstall wine through source, instead of the packages, but my ssh server keeps dropping my connection *cries*

Or just compile it from source. Apparently that's supposed to work. I haven't had the chance to try it myself.

Well I'm installing Silkroad through WINE as we speak. I'll let you know how it goes in beryl.

Image

EDIT:

It launches in beryl, but gameguard takes a little while to connect, and then when Silkroad runs it goes to a black screen and instantly disappears. Same thing happens without beryl, except that gameguard connects way faster. Any ideas?

EDIT 2:

oops, I had the MS fonts installed, that's why. It runs now, but ALL of the servers are crowded...

EDIT 3... hopefully the last.

Okay, I can get in Xian now, and it works. But as you can see below I have the text bug. Also, buffs don't show up, the sound doesn't work, and I get graphical errors in a few areas. It doesn't run bad though, I can put it on high and it'll only lag in town.

Image

It works in beryl too, but the performance is slaughtered. The reason is obvious though.

Having become fed up with WIndows, I've installed Ubuntu and am updating it (and typing in it) from within.

Edit: Gods...this is turning nasty. The screen remains stuck at 800x600 @ 50hz. Nvidia-glx drivers installed, nvidia-settings won't let me change the resolution, stuck at Auto. I've tried sudo dpkg -reconfigure xserver-xorg, as well as directly modifying the xorg.conf file to add the 1280 x 1024 lines, but it still doesn't work. I've made a thread at ubuntuforums.org, hopefully they can help me out.

The other day I recompiled wine (the 'broken' .98 version) using 'apt-get source wine'. I was able to log in and run around hotan for about 20 seconds. Once I hit my grasswalk buff, all motion in the game stopped. I could rotate the view, but couldn't move with the mouse or keyboard. I may have been moving server-side, but the client wasn't showing me moving.

I haven't tried logging in again since. I don't know if the freeze was due to the buff, or if that was a coincidence. I'll have to give it a try again sometime.

OK. I've reinstalled Ubuntu because I messed up during the NVIDIA driver installation process, it's working beautifully now. I've turned on antistrophic and antialiasing as well as texture sharpening and it's working better than it has in Windows. The server remain full however, so I'll try again when I get a chance.

I don't know what's wrong with SRO on your computers. I have wine-0.9.38 binary from the wine website (not compiled) with package msttcorefonts running at 1280x1024 with all buffs and text and etc. Just like windows.

It's just different for every machine. It's emulation, you can't expect much out of it.

Wine 0.9.39 has been released. You might want to see if that fixes it.
