There seem to be a lot of private servers now, but I'm not sure which one to go to.
Which one has the most legit activity and overall better quality? I'm trying to get a bunch of friends to play SRO for the first time and I want to make sure I choose a server that's worth it.

Agreed. I'm done with SRO for a while, if not for good. Every pserver ends up in total failure [goes down, gold bots, corruption, etc].. and everybody here changes servers on a daily basis so it's not worth it anymore.

Wrong, it was never worth it to begin with. Your statement implies, that there was a time, when it was actually worth it.
Also even if there was a suitable private server, the game is getting rather old in my opinion and after you tried out all the builds, there is really nothing new anymore. And nowadays there are just better games in general, which is no big surprise considering that SRO was developed years ago and they didn't change much since then.

Besides screwing up the system.
and making silk more and more mandatory in every aspect of the game. Nowadays it's almost pointless to even start playing, if you don't plan to buy silk. And for that same money you could just buy a much better game.
Not that i actually pay anything for my current game. I just found a much better free MMORPG, but it's only available in Japan atm and it will come to EU/NA at the beginning of 2013. I already tried the game on the Japanese server and i enjoy it quite a lot.

What game is it?
The game is called "Phantasy Star Online 2". I am not sure, if you already heard about it or not. I only knew about it, as i used to play a previous version ("Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2") on GameCube quite a lot with some friends. There are quite a lot features in the game, so i can't cover them all here. I'll just mention some points here. If you are interested in the game, you could just pm me (or we take it over to the other games section, where it actually belongs).
First thing i should probably mention about that game: It's not open world, like SRO.
You just pick a quest from the quest counter (with your pt of max 4 ppl), then you'll get ported to your instance of that quest. Depending on the quest, you can also meet other pts during the quest. At max there can be 12 people on the same instance of the quest. But of course there can be several instances of the same quest. I am not sure, if you like games, which are completely instanced, but after SRO it's a really nice change in my opinion (no KS, no bots). The 12 players in the area all work together to fight against the monsters. Occasionally there are so called "Emergency Codes", where you have to do different things, for example fighting a boss monster (some of them are actually somewhat challenging, depending on the size of the multiparty), capturing a boss monster (you have to lure the boss to a certain area and use a certain device to capture it), mining ores (with certain devices), rescuing members of your multiparty, defending certain targets, etc. There is quite a variety of different Emergency Codes, so it won't get boring that fast (at least it's not as repetive as pt-play in SRO). Also if you want to dodge/block, you have to do it manually. You won't just dodge or block due to certain stats, etc and if you have bad timing, you'll get hit quite hard (at least from certain bosses).
Then there are Emergency Quests (and other events) during certain times. During Emergency Quests the spawn rate of the monsters and the rate of Emergency Codes is increased. Therefore it's usually pretty good exp. You also have to complete the mission in a certain time (usually 20 minutes), but sometimes it's actually better, if you don't finish the quests.
There are 6 classes in total and you can play all 6 classes on the same character. However if you start with a new class, you start with Lv.1 again. But in my opinion that's not so bad. Like that you can help a lower level friend, while leveling 1 of your other classes (There is no character Lv., only class levels). Also at the beginning you can only play 3 classes. You have to level 1 of the 3 classes to Lv.30 and complete some Client Orders to unlock 1 of the other 3 classes. Client Orders are little tasks like collecting a certain ammount of times, killing a certain ammount of monsters, completing certain quests, etc. and some of them are required for progressing with the game (unlocking new areas, quests, game modes, etc.)
Anyway, there are much more features in that game, for example mags (little robot companions, which help you in combat. They can also cast very powerful attacks, so called "Photon Blasts"), subclasses, time attack quests, Photon Blast Chaining (makes them even stronger), PSE bursts and Cross bursts etc. I can't cover all those in detail here, but you can ask me via PM, if you are interested. Also the game is rather new, so there are still many updates and they add new content every month. They also try to do something against cheating, botting, etc., but with free MMORPG's it's of course not so easy to keep them out completely.
I'd suggest that you just watch some youtube videos to get an impression of the game, if you are interested in the game. For example here is a video of one of the bosses:

Well, this was helpful.
To answer your question, No. Quit SRO and move on the game was fun but now its junk. All the pservers war against each other so ddos attacks are common and servers with high pop's are mostly bots.

Well, fckin nothing normal to play. One will die cuz of DDOS(Xelhua),one will die cuz of shitty head (Underworld),other will give a **** that they'll buy a host but actually they just wait to get moar $(DemonRoad),other has shitty turkmusun community and shitty market with prices from ass(OverLimit),other will be just money machine with 1000 new features that u can buy in ItemMall(DemonRoad - 15$ for sun weap) Greed as fu.ck
What'd u guys tell about goin Devias SRO once they give out their 2nd server which gonna be 80Cap just Euros. We'd get some people,make guild,make kral parties and jobbing ;__;
The guy wanted a server recommendation and all he got is bitching about how bad the game has became. If you're more into PvE and hardcore partying, then go to myth, it has been online for like a year, had some problems but it's stable now, with ~200 activity. for pvp you can try panic sro, a really easy server, you get everything you need from the first moment, 10m sp, capped, highest tier set+7 fb, and you need to go to battle arena to get coins for elixirs etc, fun enough to give you your silkroad dose, it has some cheaters(pill bug/exchange bug) and some overpowered donators, you can just ignore those and you'll be fine. for an all around server, jobbing, pvping, pve, playsro(which has a new weird name now) is a good stable server, most professional with a nice big community, and ofc you're no match to silk buyers, but that's the drill for almost all silkroad servers. there was a server with all those pros combined, with no pay2win and a great community, but it's shutdown (salvation)
Ambition Online is your new best bet for non pay2win. While it is true that if you come up against someone in 14D while you're in 11D, you will get wrecked, but you can't buy 14D items with money, you have to job to get them as they require gold/silver coins which cost 1bil/500m respectively.
