Nintendo's six-month sales, profit double

A month after it first took the honor, Nintendo today was once again named the second-most valuable corporation in Japan. Like its rival Sony, the Kyoto-based game giant has also reported its results for the six months ending September 30, which saw both its revenues and profits double.
Sales for the half-year totaled ¥694.80 billion ($6.10 billion), a 132 percent increase over the revenue brought in during the same stretch of time in 2006. Nintendo's net profits grew even faster: The company took home ¥132.42 billion ($1.16 billion) for the half-year, almost 144 percent more than it earned in the comparable period last year. Such huge percentage increases in the game maker's financial fortunes are likely done with for now, given that future results will be compared against the company's strong performance in the wake of the Wii launch.
Nintendo attributed its success to a strong lineup of DS games such as Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (6.95 million sold for the half-year) and the Brain Age series (5.19 million sold in six months). Hardware-wise, the company sold 13.35 million DS systems for the half-year, which brought the lifetime installed base up to 53.64 million worldwide.

I was actually thinking of buying a DS the other day. Its been so long since i played a nintendo. N64 must of been the last one i played. And the snes must have been the last one i owned, lol.

Konami delays MGS4 to Q2 '08
Ever since the trailer blew people away at the Tokyo Game Show 2005, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has been eagerly awaited by many. Unfortunately, those people are going to have to wait a little bit longer while Konami puts the final touches on the game.
According to Japanese- and English-language press releases on the Konami Web site, the game will now be coming to Japan in the first quarter of 2008, and to other regions in the second quarter. The game had initially been due for a simultaneous worldwide pre-Christmas release exclusively for Sony's PlayStation 3 console. However, at the E3 Media & Business Summit in July, Konami admitted that the game would not arrive in 2007 as originally planned.
A statement from Konami gives the reasoning behind this decision: "Konami has decided to delay the title's release in order to make further improvements to the quality of the game and provide even greater enjoyment for more customers worldwide." It added that it would continue to work on the game to make sure it will "meet everyone's expectations."

Well i for one have lost all interest, i mean i loved MGS1, but seeing how they got lazy and made MGS2 just a basic rehash of number 1 it showed me that they put no effort into the game at all. Also watching the trailers MGS4 doesn't look any better either, but lets face it, Sony are looking for a game to rival Halo. Nintendo has the Metroid Prime series, praised and enjoyed by fans and critics alike, and well Microsoft has/had Halo series. What does Sony have to stand up to these two? nothing thats what.

Atari running out of quarters?
The Atari name has been tied to periods of tremendous success and financial failure. It is currently weathering a rocky couple of years that has seen the Infogrames subsidiary cease all internal development of games, sell off valuable studios and properties, institute wide-ranging layoffs, repeatedly flirt with delisting from the Nasdaq stock exchange, fight to retain the lucrative Dragon Ball Z license, and unexpectedly overhaul its board of directors, much to the chagrin of some investors.
Now the publisher isn't sure if this is a slide from which it can recover. Last month Atari announced a change to an existing line of credit. However, in
its just-filed report for the first quarter of its fiscal year 2008, Atari said the maximum amount it can borrow through the agreement won't even provide the funding it needs to make it through the current holiday season. Atari management is looking for additional financing, though by the company's own account, there's no guarantee it will materialize.
"The uncertainty caused by these above conditions raises substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern," Atari said in its filing. The publisher is considering another round of layoffs and suspended development on multiple games to save some money.

360 sales beat PS3 in Japan
Microsoft has had a notoriously difficult time cracking the Japanese console market, but this week the company notched its biggest victory in the country since Halo 3 topped the sales charts. The latest figures from Media Create show that the Xbox 360 sold more units than Sony's PlayStation 3 in the Land of the Rising Sun for the week ending November 4.
Last week's figures showed the DS Lite still on top with 78,552 units; the PlayStation Portable following with 59,714; the Wii at 37,617; the Xbox 360 at 17,673; the PS3 at 17,434; and the PS2 at 10,209.
By contrast, the previous week's sales recorded 3,718 Xbox 360s sold, and the week before, 3,011. The jump in sales was attributed to the release of the 360-exclusive game Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, which debuted at number two in the chart, and sold 76,708 copies in the first week.

PES 2008 having PS3 issues
A FAQ on the official Konami Web site has addressed some of the problems gamers are having with Pro Evolution Soccer 2008--the latest game in the popular football series.
The issues seem to mainly affect the PlayStation 3 version of the game, and include problems with online play, gameplay freezes, and "stuttering."
The Konami FAQ advises users that in the case of PS3 gameplay "stuttering" that the problem is caused by users no playing the game in high definition, and users who can should switch to a HD TV.
Konami also admits, "We have uncovered issues which affect online gameplay quality of PES 2008. We are working at full strength to find a solution as quickly as possible. We sincerely apologise for this inconvenience." Other issues included PS3 freezes when playing in Master League mode, and freezing when a match is started. Konami says these problems can be bypassed by deactivating the autosave function, and not installing the game on the hard disc.
A spokesperson for Konami confirmed that the company was working "all out" on getting a patch released to fix these gameplay issues, but said that it did not yet have a date for when this would be likely, or any official comment to make.
Oh...so all we have to is buy a HD-TV...thats simple isnt it

Interplay re-starting dev studio
Company says it will make new installments of Earthworm Jim, Descent, MDK, Dark Alliance if it can get the money.
As a publisher, Interplay is a shell of its former self. After a visible and embarrassing series of events that saw the company threatened with eviction, sued by BioWare for nonpayment of royalties on the Baldur's Gate series, and finally closed by authorities for not paying or insuring its employees, the publisher all but disappeared.
In 2006, the company revealed it was planning a massively multiplayer online game based on the Fallout universe; it just needed $75 million to get it done. That funding hasn't materialized yet, but the publisher explained how it will keep busy in the meantime in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission today.
Saying it is looking at ways of leveraging its stable of franchises "through sequels and various development and publishing arrangements," Interplay announced it is restarting its in-house development studio. The money to establish that studio will come from the recent sale of the Fallout franchise to Bethesda Softworks. (Interplay is now licensing the Fallout IP for its upcoming MMOG from Bethesda.) The publisher also said it has brought back Jason Anderson, a lead artist on the original Fallout game and cofounder of the defunct Troika Games, to serve as creative director for an unannounced MMOG.

Sierra (officially) Ghostbust-ing
Aykroyd, Ramis-penned successor to classic franchise to feature Murray, Hudson, Potts, and Atherton; Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, Nintendo DS, and PC due in fall 2008.
Earlier this week, Game Informer teased its upcoming December issue with news that a new Ghostbusters is in the works. Today, Vivendi subsidiary Sierra Entertainment officially announced Ghostbusters will arrive for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Wii, Nintendo DS, and PC in fall 2008.
As previously noted, Ghostbusters will be a continuation of the original Ghostbusters and its 1989 sequel. As with the films, Ghostbusters the game will be written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis and take place in New York City circa early 1990. Paranormal activity is once again afoot, and the supernatural scientists hook up their latest recruit--that is, the player--with a proton pack to defeat the threat.
Ghostbusters will feature appearances from the original parapsychologists Aykroyd, Ramis, and Bill Murray, as well as the fourth addition to the team, Ernie Hudson. Also reprising their film presence in the game will be Annie Potts, Brian Doyle Murray, and William Atherton.
BloodRayne studio Terminal Reality will handle development duties for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, while Mushroom Men creators Red Fly Studios will create the PS2, Wii, and DS versions of the game. Ghostbusters has not yet been rated or priced.

First Halo 3 add-on detailed
Halo 3 has already set records at retail, and it might get the chance to make some new benchmarks in the downloadable content space as well. Microsoft today announced that the Xbox 360 first-person shooter will receive an array of downloadable multiplayer maps, starting with a Heroic Map Pack on December 11.
The Heroic Map Pack will include three maps, and will carry a price of 800 Microsoft points ($10) when it debuts on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Standoff is an outdoor map designed for midsize games, while the Rat's Nest is an indoor map with an emphasis placed on vehicles and intended for large-scale team skirmishes. Finally, Foundry is an industrial warehouse level designed with the game's Forge mode in mind.
As with the multiplayer map packs for Halo 2 and Gears of War, the Heroic Map Pack will eventually be made free to download. Microsoft has said it will drop the fee for the three maps in spring 2008, just before the next selection of new multiplayer maps becomes available.

Atari Europe: Game development goes on
Earlier this week, troubled publisher Atari hit the headlines after its latest financials showed the US company's figures taking a nosedive across the board. In a statement, Atari admitted that it was concerned about its ability to continue to operate, and after selling off its development studios, it will concentrate on publishing and distribution in the US.
However, Atari's head of UK PR, Lee Kirton, told GameSpot today, "For Atari Europe business is fine. There's been some restructuring in the US but it doesn't affect Europe."
He reassured gamers that Alone in the Dark, Test Drive Unlimited, and the other titles that Atari had coming up would not be affected.
Earlier this month, Atari's US CEO David Pierce resigned after just over one year on the job, and figures were released for both the first and second quarter, both of which painted a bleak picture for the company.

EA CEO: Console transition is over
Happy days are here again for the game industry, according to Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello. In a presentation to the Reuters Media Summit in New York yesterday, Riccitiello said the "longest, hardest transition in the history of the industry" was finally over, according to a report from the wire news service.
"Last Friday marked one of those points where you can say something's changed," he was quoted as saying. "Around the world, based on the data I've got, it was pretty clear that the transition is now over."
Last Friday was Black Friday in the US, the day after Thanksgiving and the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. Both Nintendo and Microsoft have touted their sales figures for that week, with the former selling 1 million systems between the DS and Wii, and the latter moving more than 310,000 Xbox 360s. While Sony hasn't put an exact number on its sales for the week, it did say that PlayStation 3 sales had tripled.
Riccitiello also said the PS3's performance of late has convinced him that this console generation will be a "three-horse race," saying it didn't always look like the PS3 would be able to compete with the Xbox 360 and the Wii.
"I think from this point, pleasantly for me, it's sort of fat city in the game industry," Riccitiello said, predicting that current-generation console sales would hit the 200 million mark in 2012 or 2013.
