I'd go with the DS. It has more games I like, but I don't spend money on portables. Always beat them too fast cause I play them as much as console/pc games. Also, the fact that Nintendo releases like a new type of DS every year keeps me from buying one. They milk their products for all that their worth.
The green typers like Nintendo
Anyways, I like the DS better, BUT! I have reasons: People like to hack their shit, but the problem with PSP is if you upgrade it, it become unhackable (at least to my knowledge). I also believe some games need higher firmware versions, so if you hack it, you can't play newer games.
PSP does have some good games though, LocoRoco is frickin' awesome.
But the DS has custom gamepacks, so no hacking required, and you can run emulators, homebrew stuff (Colors! kicks ass), and you can download roms.
Sadly, I don't have my custom gamepack yet

I wanna get the R4DS, but they've stopped selling them, only gayass kingston sells fake ones, there's supposedly a gamepack galled Games 'n Music, but it looks so gay that I don't want it. Plus it probably sucks.
Anyways, I like DS, and I agree, Wii was aimed at a different gaming group, but I don't think the DS was, DS is very well rounded. It's more about plain innovation, though they did make some particular games for different groups, like Nintendogs was to get girls into gaming.
Anyways, I like DS, but PSP is good too.
