im looking for a new FPS to play and I was wondering if I should go back to AA. Is it good now? I played it like 2 years ago and I thought it sucked but is it good now?

I want to play battlefield 2 (with project reality mod) but I won't be able to until im a senior, so im thinking if AA is a good substitute for bf2. WWII games are getting old.

Depends.
If you someone who tries a game, fails at it, then gives up. Its not for you.

It has a very steep learning curve. As MrBow will vouch for. When I first started playing, I died every round, I shot my team mates, basically did everything wrong. Got better slowly, but surely. Started competing in Leagues, in teams had a blast something I will never forget.

If you put the time in, and don't give up it can be a very enjoyable game indeed. There are VERY few hacker problems now, if any at all. It's fully optimized at probably it's last release before 3.0 (basically a brand new game written from the ground up on the Unreal 3 Engine), which I think is due to come out in October.

Although I don't play some much anymore, and I will say that anytime I do play for 5 minutes or so, I get completely ownt because I'm so out of practice.

If you do decide to play it. Stick to one map, learn it, everything about it. Be comfortable with that, then you can get comfortable with the gameplay, THEN you can stem into other maps, theres like 43 or something like that.
Bridge, Urban Assault and Hospital being the most popular. I played Pipeline, almost religiously and its a good map to start off in IMO.

Good luck soldier, and maybe if your lucky, and you join a good team, you'll get casted, like this:

I'm Toxic Soda in it btw :)

Team deathmatch?

Each round usually consists of Assault attacking defense. You don't respawn. You'll always play as US army, and always be playing against 'opfor'.

It's a good game and competition (in EU) is finally somewhat developing.
Most beginner players quit the game early because there is no respawn. If you die, you have to sit out the round by watching other players until A) objectives are completed (which happens often) or B) all players of a team die. On the so-called longrange maps (Mountain pass (SE), Bridge SE etc) it happens you have to wait max 10 min.

For beginner users I advice you to play fast maps such as Urban Assault, Mout mcKenna and Pipeline. Bridge may be a good choice as well.

This autumn Americas Army 3.0, an entire new game, will come out. It will be played on the UT 4 engine. I'm definetely going to try out that game.

I'm also thinking about getting AA but I have played it before and stopped because of that basic training crap. Is there anyway to skip that bull stuff?

you can't skip the training but most of its common sense. The only hard part is the stealth mission which is much easier if you lookup a walkthrough. without one its basically impossible

I know it is common sense but it was just so boring. Like the target range one was so dumb. Then if you fail or whatever you gotta listen to that guy every time.

I've tried to play it MANY MANY MANY times. I wouldn't mind playing the game if I had nothing else to do, but I don't have the time to waste 30 minutes staring at my screen everytime I die with my teammates hiding in corners on the opposite side of the map from where the objective/bad guys are.

The learning curve isn't that steep, it's just that if you start playing you'll need to be in game for 50 hours before you get a real hour of combined playing and learning.

Quite simple really. Don't die, and you wont spend time waiting :)

The whole fact that you don't respawn is a very important aspect of AA gameplay. As less players go rambo as people actually value their lives, making it more realistic.

Jstar, pretty sure there wont be any respawn in 3.0 either.

Which is nice when you just start and you're playing against someone who has been playing for 5 years and could outshoot you as a sniper at long range with a pistol.

thats a disappointment. I was hoping for an alternative to battlefield 2 :(

EDIT: are there any (hopefully free) FPS games that are modern-era? im sick of shooting a tommy gun :P

Hiding on the CP roof of pipeline comes to mind :P

You're entitled to have your own opinion. Though it would be nice to share your arguements.

Edit: pm I sent to Jstar1
Quote:
Because AA is a recruiting tool of the US Army their goal is to keep the game as realistic as possible (with a certain eye for gameplay) and therefore there's the no re-spawn setting (in war you only live once as well :roll: ).
One match consists of mostly 7 rounds (or more). Each round you can die once, and if you die you have to sit out the round. Long range maps (snipe, M203(mortar) maps etc.) usually last 10 min per round which sucks to wait for.
CQB (close quarter battle) maps usually last around 5-6 minutes per round. If you start you might want to start with those maps (Urban Assault, Dusk(VIP), pipeline (choose defense side). Bridge Crossing is a good beginner map as well. Lots of beginners and pretty straight forward, you have to cross (or defend) a bridge :D

That's about it, I'll post this essay in other games as well :P

Idk if you should download or not, it's up to you. Atm in multiplayer games there are no vehicles (yet). You can't compare this game to Battlefield. They may (I think they will) come in the next AA version 3.0. Current version is 2.8.1.x or something. Check out http://www.americasarmy.com.

Played with dango tonight.
We were playing pipeline for nearly 2 hours I think. Well it felt like a while anyway :P

I somehow managed to keep a FR of 2. But omg, I'm SO rusty lol.

Hopefully next time we can get a few more SRFians together to play.

Nooo :( I suck at the moment. At least wait until I get my new 7 button mouse and my Seinnheiser headset :(
Currently using a 3 button. I use side buttons to lean. But now I have to use Q and E, but those are my report in and action buttons. Now fix jam and everything is fudged up.
Xfire: welshkorn
Can't be arsed to TS at the moment, cause I'd have to go and hide in my room (generally game in the lounge).

But feel free to add me on xfire. We can game it up :)

I've used q & e to lean for like forever. You just have to get used to it, every button will work eventually ;) Always played with a three button mouse.
my setting
q= lean left
wasd = moving
e= lean right
r=reload
f=fixjam
c=jump
space=crouch (cqb crouching;))
x=prone
z=zoom

and a bit more useless buttons :D
