StealMySoda wrote: @Stace, bear in mind in the US pools AFAIK are generally 25 yards in length not 25m, which is 22.86m. But still 10.6, sounds a bit too good considering you said you didn't do too well in your swimming competition. I go consistent 12 high to 15 lows in practice when we do sets of 25s and I'm just a freshman. I believe that redkneck does a 10.6 without a doubt. We have four kids swimming mid-high 21's for the 50Y freestyle,in practice when we swim 25 sets, those kids will go 11-12 seconds each one. We're not even close to being the fastest in the state for that event. The 50y freestyle record for for a high school team in Michigan is a 19.18.

In a 50 you generally want to take one or no breaths in your first length, then one every 3-5 strokes on your way back.

Don't take a huge breath but take a small quick one with the pocket of air that forms in the water to the right of your shoulder after you take a breath. Timing is everything. Nice to see you back xyzzy What a load of bullshit lol. Where did you learn that BREATHING makes you swim faster? 10.6 seconds breathing every 3rd stroke... lmfao you absolute bullshitter not to mention push start... Over 50m the olympic swimmers take less than 5 breaths. If you go that fast push start then you should be up their medalling at nationals ATLEAST for your age... 10.6 push, meaning you can do exactly the same on the way back, meaning you swim 22-23seconds for 50m short course. The recent Australian Olympic trials where the swimmers were wearing the latest suits etc the times were as follows: === Finals === 1 SULLIVAN, EAMON............ 22 WEST COAST..... 21.28* 2 CALLUS, ASHLEY............. 29 REDLA.......... 22.02A 3 NEWTON, JONATHO............ 27 SYDU........... 22.15A 4 TARGETT, MATTHE............ 22 MEV............ 22.37B 5 ABOOD, MATTHEW............. 21 KNGC........... 22.45B 6 RICHARDSON, KYL............ 20 COMM........... 22.69B 6 PROSSER, CAMERO............ 23 MEV............ 22.69B 8 NEUWERT, STEVE............. 23 WESTERN SPRINT. 22.71B Now, granted that is long course compared to short course.... But when you did your supposed 10.6 you would've been wearing a normal costume, it would have been during training and you wouldn't have been tapoured. Oh, and to put out there how fast that 21.28 really is, it was a world record that dropped about 5 times within the previous month of competition. It use to be high 21's or something. Really, unless you can show some site that would prove you can do a time like that (EG. list of your countries national times with your name on it lol) then i call bullshit on your attempt at acting good on teh interw3bz. mm... Swimming just takes time, the more you train the better you get really. Theres no secret formula, just hours and hours every week in the pool. Xyzzzy wrote: TOloseGT wrote: i much faster do you go if u shave ur hair? miliseconds, but that can be the difference between 1st and 8th Thousandth/Hundredth of a second* (highly dependable) Of course most proffesionals don't bother breathing for a 50 or just take 1 breath. The three stroke techniue is recomended by most coaches as it will help with hip rotation as well as so that the swimmer isn't off balance, his stroke of course isn't off balance. Breathing on both sides gives not only a better hip rotation but also a more even stroke, as well as easier kicking. I recomended it as for practice not in actual races.... For a 100 you probably would be breathing every 5 strokes for a 50 1 or twice or not at all for the 2 laps. And for a 200+ 3 strokes probably. The 25 is in short course yards. It is without a dive but with a wall start. With a dive it can get me down to 10.1 or 10.2. But of course you're second lap is always going to be slower, unless you negative split your laps. But your turns and walls must be perfect in order to do that. My 50yd time is a 21.9 shaved and tapered. In meters short course that about 24+ secs.

Over time you will get used to it and your strokes will be much more even and stronger, which will push you through the water faster. Your kicking speed will also inccrease

breath every 3 for like 500 + and every 5 for short races is what we were taught. then again, that's mostly for practice. when i'm in a race i'm not counting my breaths. i just try not to breathe much.. on a 50.. i breathe like halfway on the 2nd 25 and if really beat again right before the flags. ps. Redneck's time isn't that amazing. lol. i used to swim a 23.68 before i quit. so whatev. @original poster: keep your head down(should look at the bottom. or slightly in front of you at the bottom__ Shouldn't ever be looking at the wall). breathe every 3 strokes. Keep your kick steady. i used to just thrash about and just fcking use up all my energy as fast as possible. As time went on i put more power into my kick. and with my stroke i focused mostly on reaching forward and being able to push as much water as possible with my hand. If you want to become stronger.. find some paddles(for your hands) and don't kick. you should be able to pull yourself along with out kicking. If you can't do this. then you're technique is messed up.

oh haha. do you do both feet on the edge or 1 foot back one on the edge?
You just got to be not afraid of smacking yourself (stomach and balls) and do a nice jump out.

Ah Yes Swimming. I gave it up now. Doing laps is just boring for me. However in my prime i did 12.4s on freestyle and 13.8 on breaststroke. And if i can pass on any tips for racing it would be: <Only if you care about every second. - Wear a Cap or Shave your head - Wearing sharkskin is great, for me it shaved a few millisecond off my times. http://www.tri247.com/ext/pic/sharkskin.jpg- A Good Winning Motivation - Try to strech out your body as much as you can in the water. So you can gain those extra few cm's :p It all matters! -Practice Technique!!! In my opinion if you have a good technique then you can focus on building your body/muscles. I think its harder to do it the other way around... Yeah thats all i can think of right now.
