 Post subject: Another pc thread.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 03, 2008 10:58 am
I'll be done with my graduation project sometime in october.
Afterwards, i want to buy me a decent PC which will run for
a couple of years. I usually check the best buy guides of a
big dutch computer site, tweakers. The september guide is
finally out, and here's the outcome:

Image

Now, i have a couple of questions.
I'm sure i will get the 4870x2 (unless something way better
will be out in october which i dont think will be the case).
I'm sure i will get 4gb of RAM, and i'm sure i will get a
22" widescreen with it.

What i'm not sure about is the processor. Is a dualcore good
enough or should i pick one of the intel quads? I'm not sure
what the difference might be in the future, and i don't want
to be like stuck with a dualcore when in 2 years all games
and other things can run efficiently on a quad.

The other things i'm not sure about are cooling, power, etc.
I'm not a computer expert.

So basically what i need to know is:
- Is a dualcore good enough, future-proof enough, etc?
- Is it worth paying this amount of $$ for a pc?

The money is not the problem here tbh, i just want to know
for sure that i'm spending it on something good. And who
knows, maybe the prices will drop a bit in october. i still
have like a month to go, so i'll probably bump this topic
before i make my final decision, but it would be good to
know what to get so i can keep my eyes out for it already.

:]

If you want to game alot then go for dual core, multitasking and video editing/rendering works better with quad core. If i were you id go with a duo core. Ive read somewehere they will be better then quad for gaming till somewhere around 2010. And in those 2 years there will be new, much better and improved, quad cores whilest for now they arent optimized.

allright.

well i will be doing quite a bit of 3d modelling on the machine.
of course there will also be some gaming, but i will probably
mostly use it for the modelling and rendering.

Then go quad core.

I have a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6660. It runs better, smoother, and faster than any dual core i've used. IMO quad is better than dual, even for gaming.

explain.

both the people here and the people at the shop i was at today
(official ASUS shop, had to deliver my broken laptop) tell me
that for heavy rendering and using a lot of heavy software, a
quadcore is better than a dual core.

so tell me why a quad core is for suckers, and tell me if you
would keep running a dual core in about 5 years when most of
the software is quadcore compatible.

Seems like a good configuration but just a few suggestions.. take an arctic freezer 7 pro instead of the ocz vendetta, its cheaper and better.. might wanna scrape the default thermal paste as well and get arctic mx-2

About quadcore.. with that memory and the cooler you obviously plan to overclock the cpu, quad core doesnt work that well at non-default speeds :d

tbh, i wasn't planning on overclocking anything. i wouldn't risk
blowing up anything after spending a lot of money on it for getting
something that is already fast enough for whatever i want to do with
it ;]

just planning on getting a rig thats all. no fancy overclocking :]

OCing is pretty easy and safe as long as you're careful.

I haven't done it yet cause I'm just lazy, but if my friend who might as well have downs sometimes can do it, then most people can.

http://www.overclock.net has lots of helpful people too.

lol no. i just googled it and its 2568.292 U.S. dollars.

but 2 things about that price.

first is, i will probably buy the rig in october, which
means some of the prices may/will drop.
second, i'm letting a shop build it (the same shop as
where i bought my laptop) so i get 3 years guarantee
on the hardware. downside to that is it will be more
expensive.

so this price aint final price anyway.

I got a Q6600 for a cheap $180 for my pc a while back and overclocked it and it's great, go with quad core since your doing 3d modeling and the other stuff u said. Get a Q9450 or Q9550 and overclock it, those processors will get up to speeds almost as high as a dual core, and it's just great to have quad core for multitasking.

That is a kick ass rig, the only 1 thing I would change is the monitor. I got a samsung 2443bwx, 24inch monitor for $350 and I LOVE IT. With that rig I wouldn't limit it with a 1680x1050 res, play at a more full potential 1920x1200. It allows me to watch 1080p stuff and run my xbox 360 at 1080p finally, as well as how awesome it looks with a good pc. That 22 inch monitor is very good however, and will look great but I feel your graphics card is a bit overkill for that res.

Before you purchase the monitor, check the response time. If you want to game on it you will need it the response time to be 2ms or you won't hit a thing. (Assuming your gaming includes one or more fps games).

Ya that samsung 22 inch is 2ms, the 24 inch one I was talking about is 5ms. I don't belive what u said was true about needing 2ms, the difference between 2ms and 5ms is so small there is no way it can make a large difference if any. but ya anything above 8ms will do ghosting, but it's hard to find a decent 2ms 24inch monitor without spending a lot that's for sure lol.

i've played over 100 free mmorpg's lol.
but lately i havent found the time to game, plus
my laptop is broken atm. and this rig is both for
gaming and for rendering, as you can read in the
posts i made earlier. i just want to buy something
that's really good right now, instead of buying
something less good and regretting it later.

about the monitor, i'm not sure yet. but this was
the one they put in the best buy guide from one
of the netherlands' biggest computer sites. the
reviews of this monitor were also very good.

Like I said on MSN Overkill system all the way. Few comments to point out, take this with "Een korreltje zout" as it is my opinion/belief:

- Currently most games do not actually support Multi-threading and if they do, its usually ineffective. Future games however, are expected to have that support and efficiency. So don't expect uber results right away.
- A HD x2 is imo overkill but It will idd keep you safe for a long period of time.
- Sound card is not usefull (IMO), a lot of people claim it boosts sound really good. I haven't really noticed that much. An onboard soundcard supplies decent sound aswel, just depends on your wishes!
- If you are going to use 4GB take a 64bit OS. A 32bit OS will only support up to 3.2GB RAM. The OS 32-BIT (For example XP or Vista32) will show you have 4GB ram but will only be able to access 3.2GB RAM.
- Personally I have response time in MS on a screen as a "Selling point for gamers". I use a screen with 5ms and it works fine. I didn't notice to much differnce when using this screen (I upgraded from a CRT which has 0ms ). So my advice: don't buy a monitor just because it has the lowest MS possible.
- Don't aim for "the most expensive but best shit out there", something expensive doesn't have to be a good investment.

Either way the decision is up to you, write down what you want to do with it and what applications are required to do it with. Then check what the requirements are for these applications. Also keep a bit of "Future perspective" in mind, in the Future(0.5 years - 1.5 years from now) all games will have Crysis-Like specs (NOTE: When Crysis was launched, not the "Warhead" expansion")with a few exceptions that rise above or below that requirement. One last note, you could have had a lesser expensive (and less pwning) rig that also is futureproof. Anyhow its though to determine if your rig is futureproof or not! Buy now is outdated tomorrow!
