There sure is a Door to Hell. Not sure if this has been posted but I thought it was really cool and worth the share.

That struck me as odd too. Why they wouldn't try something to stop this and retrieve some of that gas if they can stop this that is? but I'm sure they could.

Heck if i know.It seems to be impossible to stop completely,maybe cause some cave-ins that would lead to entrapment? Either way it would be a massive waste to burn it all away.

Probably some hick who didn't think things out well enough,or didn't think at all.
