Japan tried to conquer the Pacific. They were attempting to expand their Empire which they tried doing at a time when the US had a lot of their military personnel in Europe. Then when Japan tried started bombing raids on Northern Australia and countries north of Australia (Indonesia, New Guinea, Guam etc). Japan tried to take control of New Guinea and Darwin, a long with Guam. With Darwin at the time provided a great Airport for both Import / Export at that time.
If it wasn't for America bombing Japan, and bringing them to their knees (Which America warned them they would do several times) the Pacific islands might, today have been territory belonging to Japan.

However, one thing I would like to point out. Ok, so the USA used the more powerful bomb and did the greater damage. However Japan were bombing other countries also... that makes the US only different because they did it on a much larger scale. Something which they did to protect Island Nations in the Pacific and to save Americans and their allies. Japan were doing bombing raids on other countries for the gain of their country. That, I'd say makes the Japanese worse in this case.
